Thank you so much to everyone who joined our Shakuhachi Workshop today 🇯🇵🎶

It was so much fun learning how to play this beautiful traditional Japanese instrument together — and yes, even making the first sound is a big achievement 👏

A huge thank you to Mariko sensei for guiding everyone step by step and sharing her love of shakuhachi with us 🥰

Books Kinokuniya is coming to Melbourne Central this Friday, 4 September 🎉

Have you ever tried playing the shakuhachi?

Join us for a beginner-friendly Shakuhachi Workshop and experience the beautiful sound of this traditional Japanese bamboo flute!

Our receptionist Mariko sensei is also a Shakuhachi master 🎶 She’ll guide you step by step, so no musical experience is needed at all ✨

Come along, try something new, and enjoy a little piece of traditional Japanese culture with us 🇯🇵

A lovely Sunday afternoon Benchwarmer 🥰🩷

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for Sake Talk yesterday. We tasted sake, learned a little about the wonderful world of 日本酒 (nihonshu), practised some Japanese, played games, and most importantly, enjoyed spending time together🍶🇯🇵

A huge ありがとうございます to Yuka sensei, our wonderful sake sommelier, for sharing her knowledge and love of sake with us ☺️✨

We were deeply shocked and saddened to learn of Yayoi Kusama’s passing.

Known for her iconic polka dots and fearless imagination, she was a truly groundbreaking artist. She pursued her vision as an avant-garde artist in conservative postwar Japan and went on to become one of the world’s most celebrated and influential artists.

As a Japanese woman and an art lover, I have always deeply admired her courage, originality and extraordinary dedication to her work. I feel incredibly proud of everything she achieved and the powerful legacy she leaves behind.

Her creativity will continue to inspire people around the world for generations to come.

あたたかくしてね。
Atatakaku sh*te ne
= Stay warm / Keep yourself warm! ☕️✨

It’s a sweet and caring phrase you can say to someone when the weather is chilly, a little like saying, “Make sure you keep warm!” 🥰

And yes… our tiny Japanese teacher is demonstrating it perfectly 😂🐈‍⬛🐾
