Embedding Inclusive Practices, Cultivating Kindness & Empathy: Our Cancer Awareness Learning Journey💛

At Nido Blackburn, we continue to nurture compassionate, empathetic children and build a caring and supportive community through meaningful events and educational initiatives.

As part of our community fundraising, our team and families participated in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, raising a total of $303, supporting the Cancer Council’s life-changing cancer research, professional support services, community prevention programs, and public health advocacy.

To extend this meaningful learning to our children and embed kindness and inclusion into our curriculum, we welcomed special guests from Camp Quality to our centre this week, who delivered their wonderful interactive puppet show The Buddy Bench. Specially designed for children aged 3 to 5 years old, this age-appropriate puppet show gently introduces young children to cancer-related topics in a safe, nurturing and engaging way. Aligned with our focus on children’s social-emotional wellbeing, the show guides children to understand that cancer is not contagious, and explains common hospital treatments such as chemotherapy in child-friendly language. Most importantly, it empowers children with practical ways to be supportive, thoughtful friends to peers who return to school after medical treatment.

This learning experience has been incredibly valuable for our entire Nido Blackburn community. It not only helps our children build empathy, kindness and inclusive mindsets from an early age, but also supports our educator team to facilitate sensitive, age-appropriate conversations around health, difference and inclusion for others. This initiative aligns with Child Safe Standard 2, as leadership prioritises wellbeing-focused curriculum to build a inclusive and supportive service culture, and Child Safe Standard 4 as we collaborated with family and community to support children’s emotional wellbeing.❤️

National Reconciliation Week at Nido Blackburn 🖤💛❤️

Throughout National Reconciliation Week, our educators have engaged the children in meaningful learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and achievements. Our learning experiences were purposefully planned to connect with all age groups. In our Infant and Toddler rooms, the children participated in rich sensory experiences, exploring native plants, natural materials, and Aboriginal symbols and patterns to build a foundational connection with Country. They also loved listening and moving to Indigenous Australian songs, such as Inanay and Taba Naba. Meanwhile, our Kinder children engaged in deeper group discussions and read stories about the Stolen Generations and First Nations cultures. They explored the meaning of Reconciliation and discussed why it is so important to care for the land we play and learn on.

At Nido Blackburn, Reconciliation is not just something we focus on during specific weeks, it is deeply embedded in our daily curriculum. Our children practice the Acknowledgement of Country, join Yarning Circles to share stories and participate in group discussions, and take part in Bush Kinder to foster a deep connection to the land. Additionally, our Wayapa Wuurrk sessions with Aunty Rachel provide a beautiful opportunity for the children to connect mind, body, and Earth. Through these ongoing daily practices, the children discover diverse ways to show appreciation and care for the environment. We encourage our children, educators, families, and the wider community to reflect on how we can all contribute to a more inclusive future.

To further our commitment, we have recently formed the Nido Blackburn Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Committee as an educator working group, and we recently attended an online webinar to expand our knowledge on embedding First Nations perspectvies and building a meaningful RAP. We look forward to sharing more updates soon as this journey progresses, and we warmly welcome any families who wish to share their voices, ideas, or feedback with us along the way.

🌿 Caring for Country at Bush Kinder 🌿

Our Kinder children enjoyed a meaningful and engaging “Caring for Country” incursion with Jacqui and Lucienne from the Environmental Education Program at Whitehorse City Council.

We began by singing the “Wominjeka” song and sharing an Acknowledgement of Country before exploring ways we can care for the land, plants, and animals around us during Wombat Season. The children enjoyed discovering native plants, learning about their uses, and connecting with nature through sensory exploration: touch, smell, observation, and play. We also shared many thoughtful discussions about how and why we care for Country and the land.

The children were excited to learn Woi Wurrung language such as “Walert” (possum) and “Marngrook” (footy), helping deepen their understanding of First Nations culture and language. A highlight of the day was playing Marngrook with a possum-skin ball while learning about how possums adapt and survive in nature.

This experience supported our ongoing learning about community, sustainability, belonging, and connection to Country, while also embedding meaningful opportunities to support the Child Safe Standards through inclusive practices, respectful relationships, cultural understanding, and children’s voices and participation. 💚🌏
