A small change in policy can create big delays for students who are not prepared.

From January 2025, international students can no longer lodge their Australian student visa application with just a Letter of Offer. A valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is now required before the visa process begins.

This means students must:
• Accept their offer
• Complete enrolment
• Pay the required deposit
• Receive their CoE before lodging

For education providers and agents, early planning and clear communication with students is now more important than ever.

The 485 Graduate Visa just changed.
Here's what every VET student needs to know.

If you are planning your life in Australia after graduation, the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa is the bridge between your studies and permanent residency.

That bridge just got narrower. Here is exactly what changed and what it means for you.

Age limit - dropped from 50 to 35
You must be 35 or under at the time of application. No exceptions for most streams. Plan early.

English requirement - raised to IELTS 6.5
Up from 6.0. No band below 5.5. Test results valid for 1 year only — an old score will not be accepted.

Visa application fee - doubled
From 1 March 2026, up from $2,300. Non-refundable. A refused application costs you the full amount.

Onshore switching - now closed
Students on visitor or graduate visas can no longer switch to a student visa from within Australia.

Course timing - strictly 6 months
Your qualification must satisfy the Australian study requirement in the 6 months immediately before you apply. Do not delay lodgement after graduation.

What has not changed - and this matters for trade graduates:
Trade and diploma qualifications linked to an occupation on Australia's skilled occupation list remain eligible for the Post-Vocational Education Work stream. Carpentry, Glass & Glazing, and Painting & Decorating all sit on that list.

The rules are tighter.
The pathway still works, if you plan it properly from the start.
