If you’re planning to study Early Childhood Education (ECE) in Australia, you actually don’t have to wait until graduation to start looking for a job.
Here’s how it usually works depending on where you are in your course.
1. Right after enrolling, or even before classes start
You can already start applying for:
- Assistant educator or childcare assistant roles
- Casual positions at childcare centres
A lot of centres are open to students who are enrolled in an Early Childhood Education and Care course, especially if you’re ready to get the required checks.
1. Your first 1–2 months of study
This is a good time to start applying more seriously.
By then, you’ll have a basic understanding of things like safety, daily routines and educator responsibilities. Plus, employers can see that you’ve already started your training.
1. Once you complete your Certificate III
This is when you can move into qualified educator roles, which can also mean better pay and more stable hours.
Before you start applying, make sure you check what the centre requires. You may need:
- Working With Children Check
- Police check
- First Aid and CPR
You might still be able to apply while you’re getting some of these but having them ready can definitely make the process easier.
And here’s the part many students don’t realise:
Getting into a centre earlier means you can earn while studying, build experience and understand what working in the industry is actually like.
Casual positions can be a good starting point, especially roles like float educator or lunch cover.
So, remember:
Enrolled → start applying
Studying → build experience
Qualified → more opportunities
