Hi team, with 5 weeks until GAMSAT you should all have honed in on a structure/s or approach to the way you approach Section II.
There are three parts to a high scoring response:

1. Structure (sets the foundation)
2. Quote interpretation (sets the ceiling value of the mark)
3. Ideas (bridges the floor to the ceiling).
Ideas are the single biggest thing that separates 60s from 70s-80s. But where do you find them, how do you record and organise them in ways that make the difference, and where do they go?

Assalamu Alaykum dear brothers and sisters.

This initiative by UMIS connects Muslims students in Melbourne with premium GAMSAT tutoring by 90plusgamsat - completely free of charge.

Sessions are run by Michael John Sunderland (91 in
S2, 82 overall) - founder of 90plusgamsat and author of 7 books on Section II covering two theses of material. Every sitting since he began tutoring, a 90plus student has scored 90 or higher, and 40% of his students score above 80 (approximately the 100th percentile).

Sessions will be held weekly between now and the September GAMSAT - covering Quote

Here's a common story: Student writes a paragraph, it follows the PEEL structure except they believe the Example "proves" the Topic Sentence (an example proves nothing, and also tells me nothing about your suitability to be a doctor except that you know a thing), and the Explanation is of the Example.

Since an Example, ideally, should exist to resolve the ambiguity of the Topic Sentence, it should require no explanation of how it relates to the Topic Sentence as, if it did, it wouldn't sufficiently resolve the ambiguity of the Topic Sentence.

The Explanation is of the Topic Sentence: the rest of what you had to say about it. An exploration of it as a social phenomena. When you do that I, the marker, can see YOU and what YOU think. And I can mark you for that.

The most common difficulty mans hears from S2 students is "I struggle to come up with contentions in time."

What's really going on more often than not is "I think my contentions need to be xyz way (sophisticated, interesting, complex etc) and I'm throwing away all the ones I DO come up with away."

Most GAMSAT students, in my experience, write in ways that are terribly vague. This isn't a problem due to it's impact on the writing per se, but it is a problem in terms of what it says about the writer: that they are either unsure and pretending that they know, that they are sure and don't care about communicating clearly, or that they do know and are unable to communicate clearly. This is a problem as they are all things that aren't ideal qualities in a doctor and S2 exists to identify those who would be good doctors. So, how can you strip ambiguity from your writing? Just learn this nifty little trick.
