In February 2026, Australia's international student visa offshore refusal rate hit a 20-year high of 32.5 per cent, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

In a statement, the Department of Home Affairs said that higher refusal rates are due to a focus on integrity in the sector, and “the government's focus is on ensuring the student visa program supports genuine study and skills development, protects students from exploitation, and remains sustainable".
