National Science Week: Seeds of science: 'Nurturing knowledge for all'
The children shared what they knew about volcanoes. This led to lots of curiosity and questions, including: “Why does the lava come up?” “How does it get hotter and hotter?” and “Why do volcanoes always erupt?”

When the lava comes up it goes redder and redder. When the lava explodes it gets bright orange and goes everywhere.

When the volcano blasted, it blasted lava.

The rock came from space to down and the volcano exploded.

The lava came sideways and goes everywhere and explodes rocks and lava.

Learning Outcomes

Justin and Wooyal (Wooyal Dreaming) share Aboriginal Dreaming stories that help children connect with Country, culture, language and storytelling.

The children had a few questions, so we decided to write email to Justin and Wooyal. This lead into many exchanges, including sending our version of the Tiddalick story and some drawings and paintings of Wooyal.

- engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and community members to explore their own and others social and cultural heritage.

- investigate the cultural and linguistic diversity represented in their community through a range of creative expressions

Salt dough dinosaur fossils to help the children understand how fossils are formed. By pressing dinosaur feet, and other small dinosaurs into the soft salt dough, the children explored how footprints and body imprints can leave marks.

"A fossil is a dinosaur that’s now changed to a skeleton."

"The dinosaur’s bones broke and are put back together at the museum. You dig a hole very big and get a brush to wash it."

July 5 - 12 was NAIDOC Week - 50 Years Deadly.

NAIDOC Week celebrates and recognises the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations culture.

We discussed the artwork chosen for the NAIDOC Week poster - "Parapli" by Zaachariaha Fielding.

Zaachariaha Fielding is a proud Yankunytjatjara man from the APY Lands in South Australia.

During the week the children used the poster as a prompt to create their own artwork using a range of media.

We we hosted National Pyjama Day event to raise awareness and funds to support children living in foster care.

"Sometimes children can't live with their mums and dads and they live with a foster family who take care of them. Pyjama Day raises money to help children who live in foster care."
