FOUR CANDIDATES. ONE POSITION.

The challenge isn’t attracting applicants anymore…

Most early learning services do not have a recruitment problem.

They have a selection problem.

We regularly see roles attract 100, 150, sometimes more than 200 applications.

Yet many services still tell us they “can’t find the right person.”

The challenge is rarely the number of applicants.

The challenge is identifying the one person who will still be making a positive contribution to your team twelve months from now.

Better recruitment is not about collecting more résumés.

It is about asking better questions, checking for cultural alignment, and resisting the temptation to hire the first acceptable candidate because the pressure is on.

What do you think is the biggest hiring mistake early learning services make today?

Tax time is here. But do you know what you may actually be able to claim?

Every year, we speak with early childhood educators who are unsure which work-related expenses may be deductible and which are not.

Can you claim children’s books? Professional development? Your laptop? Travel? Sunscreen? The answer often depends on your individual circumstances and the Australian Taxation Office’s requirements.

To help, we have published a practical guide specifically for Australia’s early childhood education sector. It explains the Australian Taxation Office’s general principles, outlines common work-related expenses that may be relevant to educators, and highlights eight common mistakes to avoid.

Whether you are an Educator, Early Childhood Teacher, Educational Leader or Centre Director, I hope you find it a useful resource this tax season.

Out of interest, what is the most confusing tax-related question you’ve encountered while working in early childhood education?

This article provides general information only and should not be considered taxation advice. Individual circumstances and Australian Taxation Office rules apply.

Over the past year, we have reviewed more than 2,000 applications from early childhood educators and leaders, and one observation has become impossible to ignore.

The strongest application does not always come from the strongest educator.

As applications become more polished and professionally presented, identifying exceptional educators increasingly comes down to meaningful conversations, thoughtful interviews and thorough reference checks rather than documents alone.

We recently shared some of the patterns we’ve observed and what they might mean for the sector. We’d be interested to hear whether you’ve noticed the same shift when hiring educators or leaders.

What 2,000 applications taught us about identifying exceptional educators, hiring decisions and the qualities that predict long-term success.

Truly profound.

Rita Pierson, a teacher for 40 years, once heard a colleague say, "They don't pay me to like the kids." Her response: "Kids don't learn from people they don't like.'" A rousing call to educators to believe in their students and actually connect with them on a real, human, personal level.
