Let's take it a step further...phoneme segmentation is the skill of breaking down words into their smallest sound units, like turning πŸˆβ€β¬› "cat" into /c/ /a/ /t/.

This is a critical skill for young readers, laying the foundation πŸ—οΈ for decoding and spelling.

Research shows that strong phonemic awareness is a predictor of future reading success, helping students understand the alphabetic principle πŸ”€.

Finding this post helpful? Don't forget to follow

The Science of Reading πŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬ teaches us that reading is a learned skill, not a natural one.

Because phonological awareness is one of the foundation skills of reading, difficulties with phoneme segmentation can be an early sign of dyslexia and we all know that early intervention is the best kind!

Early identification through PSF allows for timely interventions, supporting all students, especially those at risk for reading difficulties.

This is your reminder that it’s okay, no, necessary to take time out from all things school.

You see, burn out is real πŸ”₯ Teaching is one of those professions where you can give and give and give, because there is always something that needs doing or someone that needs your help.

In my first few years of teaching I worked ALL the time. I was constantly exhausted and my family and personal life suffered.

⏩ Fast forward to this year and I know better. Does that mean I always listen? Nope.

This past month has been brutal. I’ve had pneumonia, written student reports, moved house and I was DONE.

So this past week I have been AWOL from the gram, from my business and enjoyed the first week of the school holidays with the people that matter most. In a climate marginally warmer than normal 🏝

So remember, the pressure you are feeling is so normal. And while it doesn’t make it easier in the moment, know it’s part of the journey to finding that all important balance.

And if you need a helping hand? I am here to chat. My DMs are always open.

Oh hi πŸ‘‹πŸ» this is me. Well, three years ago me. Today marks three years since I said β€œI do” to my best friend β™₯️ It’s been challenging (thanks COVID) and wonderful.

Can I tell you how golden it is when teachers marry teachers? It’s just easy! They get it. The stress, the joy, the heart ache.

Anyway, this wedding anniversary we will be able to go out to dinner (thanks COVID vax) πŸ™ŒπŸ»

And oh my goodness, I get to spend the rest of my life with this guy. Blessed doesn’t begin to cover it πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

Like if you needed this reminder β™₯️ There is no reward for working until your πŸ’‘ goes out.

You are not going to be a better teacher because you have gotten to school first, worked through lunch, stayed later than anyone else or worked through your weekend.

Teaching is one of those professions where you give and give. And unfortunately this is often to the detriment to our own mental and physical health.

For me, this has resulted in being constantly sick and needing to go to bed at 7pm most nights. Hello πŸ‘΅πŸ»

You need to step up for yourself.

Give yourself the grace to take time and replenish everything you give to others.

Here are five things you can do to take care of yourself.

✨ Go take a walk in the sun
✨ Sit down to eat breakfast
✨ Go to the staffroom for lunch and connect with your fellow teachers
✨ Swap Netflix for a book before bed
✨ Make a plan for the weekend that you’re going to really look forward to.

Comment below πŸ‘‡πŸ» and tell me what you are going to do to take care of yourself this week.

We discuss how you can solve 4 common problems using our favourite non-verbal strategies.

We’re also giving away our favourite Hand Signal Classroom Display. Comment below and I’ll send you the link πŸ”—.
