Wow - it’s been a week!

I am a proud Fijian Australian and descendant of ANZACs who served in Vietnam, WWII and WWII. I was disappointed to see racism and division rear its ugly head this Anzac Day, at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance and in the fall out of Melbourne Storm’s confusing cancellation of the Welcome to Country ceremony.

I stand with stand with our First Nations people — the first defenders of this land — who have served in every major Australian conflict, often without recognition, equal pay or basic rights.

I also acknowledge the bravery of Uncle Mark Brown and the veterans and families who stood up to the few Neo N**i interruptors. Thank you!

The Welcome to Country is not a gesture — it’s a gift of connection to the world’s oldest living culture. Interrupting it, or cancelling it, and the backlash that followed, shows how far we still have to go.

As we honour all who served, we must also honour truth, respect, and justice for First Nations people.
