Port Jackson fig propogations update:
We have some more seedlings sprouting!
These were propagated by simply shoving fallen ripened fruit into soil in small seedling pots. Surprisingly, we have some seedlings!
This is very confusing though, given we seem to have all sorts of unidentified tree/shrub varieties growing in our lawn. Seemingly anything but baby fig trees! Given how many figs fall onto our lawn, we are very baffled. Maybe they get trampled easily, are too slow growing?
In any case, we are excited to finally have some baby fig trees in our greenhouse

A young praying mantis eating ants on our parrot beak plant.
The ants like to eat the nectar from the flowers, we think. There's always ants visiting the flowers.
This little guy actually walked across CJ's foot, as we trimmed some fresh cuttings. So we carried him back to the plant.

Step one of finding out what Port Jackson fig seedlings actually look like!
27/09/2023
So... what we thought were Port Jackson fig saplings, look suspiciously like the mandarin tree in our backyard, and not at all like the Port Jackson fig in our backyard.
Woops!!
But on the plus side, mandarin trees!

I put apple seeds in the fridge to stratify them, while I was on holiday.
When I got home, we took them out of the fridge. Then I forgot about them!
Stratify is when you need specific conditions for a seed to germinate. Apple seeds need cold weather, like winter.
