One of the most wonderful experiences the children in our 4 Year Old Kindergarten have is our Bush Kinder Program. A weekly Program where the children get to explore the natural world and be the instigators in their own learning. There are some many amazing discoveries to be made during each and every session. Today was the first session for 2022 and boy were these children (and educators) excited!

Dear Melbourne City Child Care and Kindergarten page followers,
It was so sad to see our first CBD Centre close in February.
BUT... it was great to see our families take up an option to transfer to our sister Centre in the CBD – the iconic Kids on Collins!
We look forward to you liking and following us on the Kids on Collins page here - https://www.facebook.com/LittleFlyersKidsOnCollinsNursery

The children in Kindergarten have been busy writing their letters to Santa this week! Sandra provided the children with a word mat and asked them if they could find the word 'To', which Ryan spotted first. After finding the word 'Santa', the children all copied the words in the letter and told Sandra what they wanted to include in the letter before copying these sentences down. During our discussions, Sandra also thought it would be a good idea for the children to add other information besides just asking Santa for presents. Ewan wanted to ask Santa if it's cold in the North pole while Clara wrote 'How are you?' before politely asking for a paw patrol toy and watch.
The children have also been given an envelope and Santa’s workshop address to copy. They learned what to write on an envelope, including what a postcode is, where many of them want to find out tonight what their own postcode is!
The children continued to develop their literacy and writing skills, when completing their letters and envelopes to Santa. They learned how letters are mailed to other people and why it is so important to write down the correct address at the front of the envelope. When writing their letters and envelopes, the children developed their understanding of key literacy concepts, including capital and lower case letters and when to use them, using finger spaces between their words and ending their sentences with a full stop.

This week our wonderful Kindergarten children are graduating!
We could not be more proud of them as they prepare to leave Melbourne City and embark on the next chapter of their lives as young members of our community.
A year full of challenges, they have overcome all and shown us all just how resilient, confident and prepared they are to tackle Big School next year.
Good luck to all of our Kindergarten children.
We know that you will amaze your next Teachers and continue to thrive in all of your future endeavours.
Congratulations ⭐️

Recently our Infants A children have been engaged in a “traffic sign and road safety” project. This project has stemmed from the children’s strong interest in all things transport related. Throughout this project the children have engaged in a variety of experiences to help them learn what various traffic and road signs mean, as well as how to be safe when around the road.
The children have learned about the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike and have taken it in turns practising how to wear it safely. They have supported each other’s learning by assisting each other to get the helmets buckled up.
The educators have also set up a fantastic experience on our level 4 playground, creating a pedestrian crossing across our bike path. The children have then taken it in turns to be the cyclists using the road, the pedestrians waiting to cross the road and the traffic warden.
These experiences are designed to help increase each child’s knowledge of safe road behaviour in a way that is fun and engaging for the children. Each child has taken to these experiences with enthusiasm and have continued to demonstrate their understanding even after the experience was concluded.

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas! 🎄
Today Melbourne City celebrated our Annual Children’s Christmas Party on our wonderful rooftop in the sky.
All children and staff ascended onto our rooftop playground, despite the slight wind and rain, and enjoyed a Christmas themed BBQ.
Art and craft experiences were enjoyed in our rooms inside, and all children were extremely surprised to receive a visit from the big man himself, Santa!
Santa gave out gifts to all of our wonderful children, who gave him hugs and many thanks in return.
Even though we could not have families attend our celebration today, all children very much enjoyed their sausage sizzle and presents from Santa.
After a very hard year for all, we sure are very thankful to have such a wonderful community here at Melbourne City.

Today Infants B embarked on a new tangent to children’s engineering mindedness: this learning focus has stemmed from an initial observation whereby children discovered that they could balance and stabilise pencils and texta-markers in the screw-holes of the locker-storage shelf.
Establishing a concentrated learning and play Centre specifically in the area of construction was important here! Today’s learning in this new area took on elements of numeracy, sensory dexterity and cognitive processes. Construction took on realistic parts as play-dough was used as “concrete” to “sandwich” the blocks together. “I built a house,” declared Oberon at the completion of his building.
This construction experience provided Diaz opportunity to practise his counting capabilities. “7 blocks,” counted Diaz. Isabelle first flatly stacked 5 blocks on top of each other- at each new stage she made, she exclaimed, ”I did it!”.
Children develop a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, inquiry, experimentation and investigating when they extend on their own interests. We might have some future architects on our hands!

Our children in Toddler A have recently been investigating all things ocean related! The children have previously made their own aquarium using recycled cardboard boxes, so to enhance this interest they decided to go fishing!
They used blue sand as water, a number of sea creatures, paperclips and magnets to create their fishing environment. Many conversations were had throughout, including what to do with the fish that they caught. All children thought that cooking their fish for lunch was the best option.
Imaginative exploration provides an opportunity for children to practise and develop their language and social skills, simply by being with and talking to other children.

Today Melbourne City Child Care and Kindergarten have acknowledged Remembrance Day. Our Assistant Director, Ashleigh, has visited different rooms, inviting the children to join her in a group time. In this group time they discussed what Remembrance Day is and have read a story called “Lest we Forget.”
The children have all listened to Ashleigh read the story, asking questions along the way and pointing out different pictures that they recognised. After reading the story we have all had another discussion about different images in the book and the things they had learned. We have discussed things such as how important friendship was to the soldiers, just like the children’s friendships and how hard it must have been to be a soldier.

This morning in Kindergarten, the children noticed how tall their beans had grown and were excited to hear that they will be re-planting them in our garden beds on level 5. Each of the children whose beans have grown tall enough, took turns with Marian to carefully take it out of the sandwich bag and investigate the plant before placing it in the soil.
Chloe was amazed to see that her stem was actually quite hard when she squeezed it, while Clara had a little boost from Marian when trying to reach the soil to pat it down around her plant. After re planting their beans and enjoying their chosen experiences outside, they all ran back to the garden bed before we left, to check up on their beans to see if they had already started to grow in the soil!
By participating in these rich and meaningful inquiry based experiences, the children have learnt to share and record their observations, make predictions, contribute constructively to scientific discussions and develop their appreciation and respect for living things in our natural environment.
