The “why” behind what we do is everything!
It is so important to know why we want to pursue a career in music, why we want to write songs, why we want people to hear what we have to say - but why?

Because our reason for doing all of this is what will propel us forward - it’s what will keep us focused and on track, and most importantly, is what will help us to push through the moments where giving up seems like the only option.

We need to hold onto our motivations for dear life, because they are what will give us the strength and the grit to persevere through all things 💪

* Activity: Write down or dot point your why(s) on a piece of paper and stick it up on a wall in a space that you love and that you pass everyday to serve as a constant reminder!

“Often the song idea that you start with is not the song that you finish with.” - Brandon Lake 🙌

When entering a co-writing session, try to be extremely open-handed with your ideas.

It’s not always about what you feel is the best, but about what works best for the song.

And remember, even if your idea is changed or doesn’t get used, it’s not a reflection of how ‘good’ you are, it’s just about finding the right pieces that fit together 🧩

A really great point from K-Pop songwriter, Adrian McKinnon 👏

It can be so easy to get caught up in the process of trying to come up with a great idea or even build from great ideas you already have.

Whether it be when it comes to melodies, lyrics, even harmonies and backing vocal parts, production, etc - sometimes the best and most effective thing we can do is just stop and listen.

Through doing this, we hear and notice things that help us create something we may not have if we didn’t just listen 👂

(this is from Adrian McKinnon’s two part interview with React to the K)

Can’t believe we’re already a week into February!

Looking back on 2021 - though it was definitely another strange and uncertain year for many - I find it amazing and so encouraging to see that so many Jaanz artists and alumni were still able to work on and release music!!
It goes to prove the power of resilience and perseverance 👏

As we get into the swing of 2022, I encourage you to not let anything stop you from doing what you love and reaching your goals for the year!

We are so excited about the music to come this year and to see our artists continue to grow into all they can be!!

P.S. You can find all these songs and more on our Spotify - LET’S KEEP SUPPORTING LOCAL ARTISTS 🙌

I think truely understanding this is a game changer🙌

Record deals and being signed is a great achievement and can bring about a lot of opportunity and exposure in the music industry - BUT if we just wait around to be recognised by labels or certain industry professionals before we establish ourselves in our individual artistry, we can risk never truely becoming the artists we were meant to be, and possibly even risk being moulded into something we’re not.

If you are an independent artist/performer/writer/producer (the list goes on) right now, USE THIS TIME to discover who you are as a creative and why you do what you do, to work on your craft and develop new skills, and to established your vision - because that is what makes a true artist.

Another thing - I feel like it’s also important for us to understand that most things in the creative industry are momentary and fleeting; opinions change, trends come and go, but what will keep you going strong is knowing who you are as an artist authentically, and sticking to it 💪

Hope you all are well, and keeping safe!

Such an important reminder from Olivia Rodrigo 💫

As songwriters and artists, our top priority should be authenticity.
Being true to who you are, sharing your truth & being vulnerable, though never easy to do, holds so much power - it’s how we can make a positive impact and connect more deeply with people 🤍

(this is from Olivia Rodrigo & Dan Nigro’s break down of ‘Deja Vu’ with Rolling Stone)

Creating anything out of nothing, writing a song from a blank piece of paper & 12 notes - not the easiest thing to do. But what an incredible process it is!

Hope this encourages you in your songwriting today 🤗
