Hot off the presses and now available to purchase!
This new book takes 12 of the most popular children's story books for the Foundation – Year 1 age range and provides a number of mathematical activities for students to do based off the story book; for example investigating patterns in Lynley Dodd’s Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy. The book includes copiable resources to make using the activities a breeze. Each story book is given multiple mathematical activity options.

Love this Maths Talk image.

Can you prove they are squares?

How many squares can you find?

What do you notice about each of the squares?

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki: Mr Archimedes' Bath 14/11/2020

The amazing Dr Karl reading Mr Archimede’s Bath. Great story to initiate investigations in Mass, Volume and Capacity.

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki: Mr Archimedes' Bath Love a good book and a great mystery? Filled with bubbly personality, join our favourite scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and Joey as they get to the bottom of Pamela Allen's classic, Mr Archimedes' Bath.

My new book has arrived!
The fifth one in my set (year 1 and 2 to go) and my favourite maths books at the moment.
Such beautiful lessons that really delve into the big ideas in maths at each year level.

I’ve been working with a year 3 student in Number Intervention and when presented with the equation 58+24 in her initial assessment, she attempted to count on 24 by 1’s from 58, keeping track on her fingers. Needless to say it was a struggle for her!

Since then we’ve been working on addition and subtraction strategies she needed based on the Learning Framework in Number trajectory and used hands on resources to develop a strong understanding of number.

So this week I presented her with the equation in the picture and with fluency, ease and confidence she solved it with no fingers in sight using all the strategies she has gained.

And you could not wipe that smile off her face and the smile is still on mine!

Better get my purse!
Little bit excited that two new I See Reasoning books have been released! 😆

If you haven’t used these resources then check them out and add them to your collection. The questions and tasks in them are fantastic and really make students think about maths and provide opportunities for rich discussions.

Place Value Houses are a great resource for helping students learn to read, write and understand numbers.
I recently created this on google slides to use in my google meets.

Send me a message if you would like a copy.

This is a quick example of using a ‘roll and cross off’ type number game to practice early number concepts.
This example focuses on numeral recognition, subitizing and 1:1 correspondence.
And even though we are learning we are having lots of fun!

I love picture story books for teaching Maths concepts and this is one of my favourites. ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ is a great book for engaging students in the concept of location and definitely one you should add to your list!
