If you had a hippo and had to hide it, where would you put it? Well, the protagonist in this story has a whole lot of suggestions!

Under a chair? Perhaps in the fridge? Or maybe, in a tree fort! In an attempt to hide her hippo from her mum, a child comes up with a series of creative hiding places, each more outlandish than the one before! It’s a celebration of a child’s endless imagination and determination to keep her hippo safe ☺️

This is a playful picture book that’s written in rhyme and invites readers to excitedly anticipate the next spot! The clever twist at the end of the story makes for a satisfying ending. Perfect for a read aloud that’s followed up by getting readers to create/write about their own hiding spot for a hippo!

Bear Rescue is beautiful addition to Hannah Gold’s heartwarming series of books that feature messages of environmental advocacy and strong connections between children and wildlife.

This story follows April, the well-loved protagonist from Finding Bear who has a special connection with a particular polar bear. Set in Svalbard in the far north Arctic, April and her family spend their days living in a beautiful, yet harsh environment.

It’s a day of celebration and April is part of a top-secret family event. Everything seems to be going according to plan until a sudden snowstorm hits and August, April’s little brother goes missing! With the help of her beloved polar bear and a husky named Blaze, April takes it upon herself to find and rescue August.

Bear Rescue is a much shorter novel compared to the other books in this series. Its wholesome writing and short format makes it accessible to younger readers and would even work well as a class based novel study!

A picture book that will make kids with hayfever and other allergies feel so seen! Written with playful, rhythmic rhyming text, it’s such an engaging one to read aloud!

Casey Keys is a girl with a pretty explosive sneeze. Her allergies itch her nose and anything from bubbles in her bath to a pigeon feather on her path can make her sneeze. Her sneezes are so violent that they can rattle rooftops and send the neighbourhood cats flying!

Casey feels bad that she causes so much chaos and decides to sail out to sea to sneeze in peace. She starts to long for her friends and family who soon come together to help Casey manage the situation in a really fun way ❤️

I simply adored this story! The bright and expressive illustrations capture Casey’s explosive sneezes and following chaos in such an engaging way. Highly recommend this one!

Inspired by true events, The Flower Garden tells a story about the women and children who were held at the Changi POW camp in Singapore during WW2 when the country fell to the Japanese. Despite being Singaporean myself, this book describes a piece of history that I was never aware of. I’m always in awe of how illuminating picture books can be.

This touching and gentle war story centers around Mrs Elizabeth Ennis, who took it upon herself to normalise life as much as possible for the children in Changi. She started a secret Girl Guides group to help them cope and give them hope. In turn, the children secretly scavenged for fabric scraps to turn into a ‘flower garden’ quilt for Mrs Ennis’ birthday.

The Changi Girl Guide quilt has since been donated to the Imperial War Museum by Elizabeth Ennis’ family.

This is a beautiful and poetically written historical story that definitely deserves a place on your shelf. The Teacher Notes on the Walker website provide support for the use of this book in the classroom.

Evie loves celebrations of every kind and this time around, it’s up to her to judge the Celebration Festival! How will ever pick a winner when she enjoys them all so much? She’ll have to take a careful look at each one before deciding 😁

Each double page spread of this book features a calendar month and showcases the festivals or celebrations that occur in each one. The featured celebrations range more well known ones like St Patrick’s Day and Earth Day in March to quirky ones like Spaghetti Day in January. It’s wonderful seeing a wide range of different cultures featured in this book.

A useful resource for the classroom to support discussions and units about multiculturalism and celebrations ✨
