🌸🌎Happy World Environment Day🌏🌸
One of the most important and necessary values we can teach children is a love and respect for nature. Teaching children to respect the environment is essential in creating a sustainable future for generations to come. At HEY we take great pride in ensuring that learning about the natural environment and the interdependence of living things is embedded throughout our educational programs and daily rituals. We proudly deliver a Kitchen Garden program which sees all classrooms participate in specific targeted lessons about the environment once a fortnight. These lessons are fun and hands on, tailored to meet the developmental needs and interests of each age group.

🌈Paper Making tutorial with Rachel 🌈
You will need:
-Shredded paper - this can be from old art work (without paint preferably but still works fine)
-A blender or stick blender
-1x fly screen with sturdy frame
-2x pieces of fly screen mesh cut to be as large as the frame
-A frame made out of semi-waterproof timber (ours was made out of pine, the size of the frame will determine the size of your paper)
-1x pvc pipe (we cut ours in half so we had two pieces)
-Cellulose sponges
-1x jug of water
-2 x large old towels
-1x big tub that will hold your fly screen but is bigger than your timber frame (to catch the water)
Step 1 - Add your shredded paper to warm water and blend.
Step 2 - Set your fly screen frame on top of a large tub, layer one piece of mesh fly screen before adding your timber frame on top.
Step 3- Pour the paper pulp slowly into the inside of your frame, making sure to not leave any gaps. The more you add or the less water in your pulp the thicker your paper will be. Let this drip out the bottom for a little bit.
Step 4 - Remove the frame carefully from the pulp and add the second piece of fly screen mesh on top so that your paper pulp is sandwiched between two pieces of the soft mesh
Step 5- Use the sponges to gently press and squeeze out as much of the water.
Step 6- Have a folded towel ready to place your on the mesh paper pulp sandwich on to. Keep the mesh on the top and bottom is important at this stage. Lay it on the towel and roll with the pipe to squeeze out any remaining water.
Step 7- Peel off the first piece of mesh
Step 8- You should now have one piece of mesh with your paper on top, use your hand underneath to lift up your paper and flip it onto another towel for drying.
This can take up to 3 days depending on weather.
🌸Additional notes - you could add leaves, flowers, eco glitter or food colouring to your paper pulp to jazz it up a bit! This paper is great for painting on or making cards for loved ones.

💫LOOSE PARTS PLAY💫 Inspired by the patterns and shapes in the ‘Art In Country’ by Bronwyn Bancroft the children created their own stories using natural loose parts. The loose parts play theory is based on the idea that when children are presented with a collection of small objects, they have more opportunities for creativity and engagement as they rearrange, redesign and tinker with the parts, using symbolic play to create patterns, stories and new objects.

💕What does love mean to a three year old? 💕 Ever since Valentine’s Day last month, our Banksia children have been involved in an ongoing project about love. They have been learning about the 5 different love languages and discussing ways in which they like to show love to others and talking about the different ways that love is shown in their families. This has created some beautiful and heartwarming discussions between children and educators and we are excited to see how this project will continue to evolve…..

In celebration of our final day of the year our lovely kitchen team put together a roast lunch for all of the children to enjoy in our garden room. It was such a wonderful chance to come together as a community and reflect on the amazing year that was! The children loved the festive decorations and Bon Bons and enjoyed sharing in conversations with their educators about what they are looking forward to over the break. Wishing all of our HEY community a safe and relaxing break over the holiday period and we can’t wait to see you back again next year! 🎉☺️

Service Manager Job in Hawthorn, Melbourne VIC Do you want to be part of a innovative transformational leadership team where you voice is heard and impacts on all aspects of the service delivery?

This morning our 4yr Old kindergarten classes visited Glenferrie Primary school who kindly let us use their art room for an art class. We spoke with the children about starting school next year, discussing what they think school will be like, what they are excited about and what they have experienced so far during their transition sessions. The children were then invited to create a self portrait wearing their new school uniform and doing an activity that they are looking forward to at school. The children were so excited to get out to explore their local community and we are so grateful to Glenferrie Primary for welcoming us in to their school and sharing their facilities with us.

Love this! For young children play and learning are one and the same!

⭐️💫Happy Diwali 💫⭐️ Here at HEY the children have been engaging in a range of meaningful hands on experiences to celebrate this festival. One of our lovely educators created a beautiful Rangoli display in our Garden room area, while the children have been further exploring this celebration through creating their own Rangoli art work, cooking Roti, decorating their classrooms with Diya’s and reading books to learn more about the meaning behind Diwali.

At Hawthorn Early Years, we have embraced the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program since the beginning of 2019. Through this program, children are given the opportunity to learn to grow and care for seasonal fruit and vegetables, harvests them once ready, prepare the food in engaging cooking experiences and share the nutritious meals with peers and educators.
We strongly value a child-led approach, where children are completely immersed in nature, so that they are instinctively inspired to learn. The children are invited to engage in fortnightly Kitchen Garden sessions where the lessons are planned to complement the programs that are occur in each of our 9 classrooms, beginning with our youngest learner’s right up to our Kindergarten children. For more information check out our recent article published in Every Child Magazine volume 28 NO. 1 2022.
