Thank you to everyone who joined and participated! It was great connecting with likeminded people across Australia to establish a network for joint PhD programs with Europe 🇦🇺🌏

🇪🇺🤝🇦🇺Yesterday we had the pleasure of speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Australian-European joint-PhD-program coordinators on European Funding - , European Research Council ( ) grants and Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions ( ).

Good to see so many Australian universities in one place - excellent initiative. Many thanks for inviting, Gateway Office University of Bayreuth & University of Melbourne👏.

We congratulate our recent alumna student, Dr Maike Effern, who was just awarded with the prestigious Young Investigator Egon-Macher-Award of the ADF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Dermatologische Forschung) 2021 in Germany.

The award recognises early career researchers and their outstanding research contributions in the field of experimental dermatology.

Maike received this award for her publication “Adoptive T cell therapy targeting different gene products reveals diverse and context-dependent immune evasion in melanoma”, published in the peer-reviewed journal Immunity in September 2020 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.immuni.2020.07.007

👩‍🎓 PhD Orations 👨‍🎓

At Melbourne University our doctorate students present their PhD at a completion seminar before submitting the thesis and being able to then sit the oral exam.

Other students will traditionally advertise the seminar via a poster to celebrates the nearing completion of the PhD.

There are no rules other then to have fun and to be creative 🥳

We did it! In July 2020 our joint PhD program in Immunology was renewed for a second funding period from 2020-2025.

Thanks to the DFG for the award of 5 Million Euros and matched funding by the University of Melbourne.

Celebrating across the globe, 'covid-style'.

In Germany we celebrate the completion of a PhD with a 'home-made' mortarboard cap/doctoral hat by your colleagues. And they are never short of creativity!

These images show some of our students completing their PhD in 2020!

We couldn't be prouder. Congrats to the class of 2020 (and everyone else who is not captured in these pictures👌).

In November 2019 our joint PhD program was reviewed for funding renewal by the DFG (The German Research Foundation).

We underwent a vigorous 2-step review process during which we had to demonstrate our achievements of the past 4 years, including candidature completions, publications from within this program, program administration and curriculum, and overall student satisfaction. Our students also presented their work to impress the reviewers.

The review process also included the submission of a lengthy review document (2016-2020 funding), and the application for renewal (2021-2025 funding).

Did we do well enough?

We host an annual career day for our students to demonstrate the diversity of career opportunities after completing a PhD in Immunology.

Guest speakers include representatives from Industry, Government, SciComm/Media, Teaching, Publishing and more.

This workshop is one of our most popular events with students feeling inspired and encouraged to also explore employment beyond the conventional academic setting.

In May 2019 we held our 'kick-off' meeting for the new student cohort in Bonn.

Students and P*s of this program can meet during the day, listen to the projects, and learn more about the IRTG and everything the program has to offer.

Good luck to everyone in the class of 2019 🎓

A delegation from the University of Bonn visited the University of Melbourne in September 2018 to sign the 'Memorandum of Understanding' (MOU).

This agreement between both Universities supports mutual interests in existing and future research collaborations, including joint PhD opportunities, exchange of academic staff, and the organisation of lectures and/or symposia.

A welcoming step between both partners 🤝

The Bonn-Melbourne Research Network participated in the European Congress of Immunology, September 2018 in Amsterdam.

We were able to showcase our international exchange programs:

- The Bonn and Melbourne Research and Graduate School in Immunology: a PhD program for the exchange of students between Bonn and Melbourne Universities, first established in 2016.

- The Bonn & Melbourne Academy for Excellence in ImmunoSciences/Infection (BM-AXIS): an exchange program for academics (postdoc and beyond) for research and teaching activities between Bonn University and several participating research institutions in Melbourne, first established in 2017.
