CUDL is taking a short 4 week break to regroup, and we’ll be back stronger than ever in May! 💪

Thanks to all the volunteers who have leant their hands to this cause since our last hiatus, and everyone who has signed up the last few weeks! The response to our recent calls has been incredible.

We look forward to getting back to feeding Naarm’s homeless and in-need population with fresh faces, hot coffee, good food and smiles.

Another beautiful day! Thanks to all our volunteers for making this kitchen possible each week ✊ if you’d like to help us get some food & drink out to those who need it, check out the link in our bio! You don’t have to be an extrovert either, we need help from cooks and drivers if you’re more of a behind-the-scenes kind of worker!

The other week organisers Tahlia and Felix spoke with about our work. Thankyou Joseph and Kelly for having us on, it was a pleasure! ❤️❤️

“Since 2019 CUDL has been handing out home-cooked meals to anyone who needs one on the steps of the State Library, every single Sunday from 3pm to 6pm. Call them on 0480 039 002 if you would like to help out or find out more.

CUDL began life in Adelaide as support to a .sa official, with the community raising thousands of dollars to pay most of their fine. They now have branches in a few states and areas around Australia and support workers’ strikes and pickets. CUDL provides programs of solidarity and support within the capitalist system. They would also like to help other groups set themselves up for progressive activities.

Tahlia and Felix were great guests and we had fun chatting with them. As young activists, they also shared with us what they have learned about homelessness in Melbourne on Sunday afternoons during their meal times. Keep up the great work, Tahlia and Felix, and look after yourselves and each other.

The history of the Community Union Defence League and its commitment to a more just society demand that we act now. At this very moment, federal and state governments are delivering a blow against what many regard as the most effective union in the country.

CUDL was formed in 2016 in response to a previous assault on the CFMEU. The Australian Building and Construction Commission sought to jail officials and organisers of that union and succeeded in hitting some with crippling fines. Outraged workers responded by raising funds to help with these fines and rallied community support for the union. These were the origins of CUDL. Since then, CUDL has expanded into other work such as the street kitchens that help many of the worst hit victims of the economic system imposed on us.

From the beginning, our street kitchens have been met with official harassment and police intervention. One after another, bureaucratic obstacles were placed in our way. Our brothers and sisters in the CFMEU rallied to our side to defend us. They know what it’s like to be obstructed and punished for helping those who need assistance; in their instance, to guarantee the right to a living wage and to come home from work in an industry where many have perished on dangerous building sites. The pressure on them never relaxes but they have stayed strong.

We are duty bound to repay their solidarity in whatever way we can. It is a time for networking and a lot of creativity and initiative to bring people together in opposition to what is happening. Equally important is a swift response given the impatience of the enemies of the working class to achieve their goals.
