A very timely storage tip I’ll be giving a try. I have an abundant supply of juicy lemons 🍋 at the moment and just today had to discard a few that had been picked as they were quite mouldy. 🤢

With the rest of the picked lemons I had, I made lemon sorbet and paleo lemon gummy lollies (thank-you Thermomix!)

📦 STORAGE TIP⁣ 📦

💦 Did you know submerging your lemons in a bowl of water is the best way to store them?⁣

🍋 When lemons lose moisture they start to mould or rot. So, not only does it preserve them, but it also helps keep them juicy!⁣

Leave a '🍋' if you try/already do this

Here's what we did:⁣
🌱 Lots of citrus fruits have a layer of wax on the outside, either naturally or sprayed on. You can wash them free from wax, pesticides or handling germs in two ways.⁣

👆 The first way is using the Natural Fruit & Vegetable Wash, you can put the lemons into a bowl with a pump of the wash and follow the directions.⁣
✌️ The second way is to soak them in a half water and half vinegar mixture for a few minutes.⁣

🌱 Give them a quick rinse and place them in your new lemon container or bowl⁣.

📣 PSA: Don’t forget to use the remaining water for your plants ⁣

Mother’s Day feels like the perfect day to acknowledge the fact that, more often than not, it is a mother’s intuition, nurturing instincts and desire for answers that leads her to discover the impact environmental toxins can have on the health of her family.

We know from our own personal experiences that it can feel overwhelming just learning about all the different topics, let alone actually making changes within the home. Whilst we can’t reveal the details just yet, this is about to change!

Very soon we will be able to share with you the exciting project we have been busy working on which is all about supporting you to make the changes you want to make for your family and home.

After an extended break, Laudy, Tammy and I are feeling renewed and energised as we launch back into growing the presence of Healthier Homes and Living as the go to resource for informing and creating a healthier home environment.

The three of us spent much of the later part of 2020 focusing on what’s ultimately most important: Self-care and nurturing our beautiful families. We also had time to reflect on the feedback we had received from our followers, the lifestyle adaptations brought about in 2020 and the growing demand for practical and innovative ways to be supported in creating a lifestyle and home environment that facilitates optimal health.

We have some incredible projects in the pipeline and will be launching the first of these very soon. Trust us when we say this is BIG, it’s unique and you do NOT want to miss this. Sign up to our mailing list @ healthierhomesandliving.com to be the first to know!

Our New Normal is saying goodbye. Goodbye to our name that is!

Our New Normal was chosen to represent our mission of empowering people to create a healthy home environment to thrive in. Unfortunately, we found Covid Normal was becoming ‘the new normal’ and not at all what we are about.

So today we say hello and welcome as Healthier Homes and Living.

We are the same team committed to informing people about the environmental factors in the built environment that can contribute to ill health.

We look forward to returning with season two of our Podcast show very soon! In the meantime you can head to our website www.healthierhomesandliving.com/ and catch up on any episodes from season 1 you may have missed.

Here’s a handy guide on hardwiring your laptop or tablet.

Hardwiring at first might feel a bit old school however not only do you significantly reduce your EMF exposure, hardwiring also offers a faster and more consistent connection.

Being online all the time is a drag. You know you feel it, drawn and stuck to the screen. It's a drag. Time to take measures to use safely. For instance, if you put your cell phone on your nightstand at night, turn it off or place it in airplane mode. Tell us if you notice the difference in your quality of sleep! Share your experiences for positive change by breaking the Wi-Fi addiction! Help us grow our online community — via Ethernet! — by sharing our posts with friends and family.

We love these simple, all natural snail and slug deterrent ideas by our friend Liv at Holistic Health Coach.

Snail pellets generally contain metaldehyde, a poison that acts on the nervous system in animals and birds. The potential poisoning isn’t limited to an animal or bird eating the pellets directly. Unfortunately wildlife that eat snails and slugs that have digested the pellets can also be harmed.

I use the crushed eggs shells method in our veggie patch at home. A gentle whizz in my thermomix and they are ready to spread.

Let us know in the comments if you have any more snail and slug deterrent ideas! 🐌

Low Tox Tuesday - snail bait

Traditional snail/slug pellets contain metaldehyde which is highly toxic to cats, dogs, birds and other mammals such as hedgehogs (and children!)

Here are some low tox alternatives if snails are invading your veggie patch:

🐌 crushed egg shells scattered around as a barrier
🐌 coffee grounds
🐌 beer trap. I’ve had huge success with this method in the past. Partially bury a jam jar tilted on its side, fill the bottom with beer and empty every couple of days.

There is so much truth to this. 🙌🏻

Often when we are learning new information, such as the amount of unnecessary and harmful toxins found in products we use in our homes, we want to change out everything, as of yesterday!!

However we are wise to remember that making changes and swaps so that they become a new, ongoing habit and work for us whilst also avoiding feeling overwhelmed and stressed are all important parts of the solution journey. Then before you know it, you will look back and be amazed at how much you’ve achieved. 🌟🤩

Today's podcast guest is with the wonderful Jo Whitton, best known as the incredibly talented cook and blogger at Quirky Cooking.

Jo is an author of several cookbooks; her first book, Quirky Cooking was a hit with Thermomix owners wanting tasty recipes for specialist food diets. She then co-authored the instant bestseller Life-Changing Food cookbook which provides both Thermomix and Conventional cooking options for each recipe and I have to say, it is most definitely one of my favourite cookbooks! Jo also hosts her own podcast show, Quirky Cooking Chats and runs cooking workshops, seminars and gut health retreats.

Today's chat explores Jo's personal story with food intolerances and the challenging journey her family faced when her son Isaac suddenly began experiencing severe OCD and anxiety.

Adopting the GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) diet to heal and rebuild Isaac's gut health through nourishing foods saw a remarkable improvement very quickly and a total recovery within a year. This experience has lead to Jo developing her own gut health program to support others wanting to heal their gut health with GAPS based food recipes.

We also find out how Jo manages to juggle all of this given that she has also home-schooled her four children.

We absolutely loved this chat and know that you will too!

As Tammy has shared on her Building Biology Mama Page, children’s exposure to EMF radiation needs to be assessed with even greater caution because they are far more vulnerable to the effects for many important reasons.

Children are not little adults and cannot be treated as such.

Environmental toxins and chemicals are one such area which thankfully more people are becoming more aware of and as a result mamas are making more informed choices on what they put on or in their children’s bodies.

The safety concerns regarding EMF radiation is no different.

So even though EMF radiation can harm everyone whether young or old. As R states, studies show that children are move vulnerable to the harmful effects if exposed!

R and SYB put together this easy to understand video and infographic outlining the facts.

Today's podcast is with food allergy counsellor, advocate, nurse and author Simone Albert - Food Allergy Counselling.

Simone shares with us her family's own personal journey with life threatening allergies and how it has since shaped her career path.

We chat about the lack of attention given to the mental health aspect of an allergy diagnosis and why this prompted Simone to write her recently launched first book, ‘Beyond the Allergy Diagnosis: A Guide to Understanding and Navigating the Emotional and Psychological Phases of Allergies'. Simone discusses the books format which is centred around the 8 phases of an allergy journey with accompanying support tools and exercises designed to further support and guide individuals and families.

Simone also shares some useful tips on how to safely navigate an allergy diagnosis and the way in which family, friends and the school community can offer support.

You can purchase a copy of Simone's book online through Amazon, Book Depository or Fishpond. Alternatively you can purchase a signed copy direct from her website: www.foodallergycounselling.com
