Lake Argyle on a BBQ boat was one of those days that was simply hard to beat.

🧡 Good food.
🧡 Beautiful scenery.
🧡 Fun fishing and swimming.
🧡 Great company with new friends met along the way.
🧡And plenty of time to just enjoy being together.

Travel provides so many opportunities for children to experience places they might otherwise only see in a book or on a screen. Geography, environmental science, weather, water systems and wildlife can all become much more meaningful when you're actually there.

And sometimes... You just need to enjoy the BBQ boat. This was definitely one of our favourite days!

If you're looking for free literacy resources, The Literacy Hub is one worth knowing about.

It provides resources and information designed to support literacy development, including reading and language resources for children and families.

Digital resources can be particularly useful when you're travelling because you can access them without needing to carry another pile of books around Australia.

Some of my favourite learning moments have started with one of those questions.

You don't always need a worksheet ready. In fact, most times you don't... sometimes you just need to follow the question.

So... what does a home school day actually look like when you're travelling?

Honestly? It depends.

Some days might include a couple of hours of intentional learning at the table. Some days might involve some reading, maths and / or writing before heading out for the day.
Some days might be mostly practical learning.
And some days? We don't do theory-based learning at all.

If we're moving the van, exploring somewhere new or making the most of an experience, that can take priority. Then we find another quieter day to settle back into our routine (rainy days are the best days for theory-based learning).

That's one of the reasons I believe flexibility is so important when home schooling while travelling.

The routine is there to support you because, even though kids will never admit it, they actually love a good routine. 😉

We're not about doing the same thing over and over. Instead, it's more of a "same-same-but-different" approach - familiar enough to provide some consistency, but flexible enough to fit around life on the road (because we get it!).

One of my favourite things about travelling is discovering all the little places where families can find books. Don't forget to look beyond the obvious!
📚 Public libraries
📚 Community libraries
📚 Book swaps
📚 Local book stores
📚 Tourism information centres
📚 Op shops
📚 Caravan park book exchanges and laundries - yes, it's a thing!
📚 Local community groups

Some caravan parks even have shelves where travellers leave books for the next family. Children can choose a few books, read them, and swap them again when they move on. It's a simple way to keep reading material fresh without filling the caravan with books. And honestly, finding a new book in an unexpected little town is half the fun.
