πŸš€ Science Took Off at St Mary's! πŸ§ͺ

National Science Week got off to a flying start as our Science Ambassadors put their problem-solving skills to the test in a spectacular Soda Rocket Challenge on the College oval!

Working in teams of two and three, students experimented with different combinations of soft drinks including Coke, Pepsi, Solo, lemonade and their diet varieties, along with Mentos or salt, to create the perfect chemical reaction. The goal? Generate enough pressure to launch their rockets as high as possible!

Adding an extra layer of innovation, the rockets themselves were designed and created using the College's 3D printers, combining science, technology, engineering and creativity in one exciting challenge.

With plenty of fizz, laughter and a few surprise launches, it was a fantastic way to celebrate National Science Week while showcasing the curiosity and ingenuity of our Science Ambassadors. πŸ”¬βœ¨

πŸ§ͺ✨ A Legacy of Science at St Mary's College ✨πŸ§ͺ
πŸ”¬πŸ† Celebrating 19 Years of Scientific Excellence πŸ†πŸ”¬

St Mary's College is proud to have been recognised through the Science Ambassadors Program, receiving an award acknowledging our ongoing involvement in this outstanding initiative.

Representing the College during the recent school holidays, Ms Ashleigh Vicic attended the Science Ambassadors Awards Ceremony at The University of Queensland, where St Mary's was recognised as one of the program's longest-serving participating schools.

Yesterday, Mrs Krissy Lourigan, Learning Leader of Science, proudly presented the trophy and certificate to Principal Mrs Bree Brockenshire. The award is a testament to the many students and staff who have contributed to the program over the past 19 years.

As the Science Ambassadors Program celebrates its 25th year, we are honoured to be recognised among its most dedicated schools.

Congratulations to all past and present Science Ambassadors. We hope this inspires our next generation of curious and passionate scientists!
And thank you to Mrs Lourigan whose learning leadership continues to foster a love of science among our students.✨πŸ§ͺ

πŸ§ͺπŸš€National Science Week! πŸš€πŸ§ͺ
Today at assembly, to celebrate National Science Week, our Learning Leader of Science, Mrs Krissy Lorigan, set an exciting challenge for every PC.
Armed with the same materials, the same instructions, and the same constraints, each PC team was tasked with designing and constructing a working catapult. The challenge? Use science, creativity and teamwork to create the most effective design possible.
The PCs went head-to-head as representatives from each House tested their creations in an epic catapult showdown. Students explored key scientific concepts including force, energy transfer, trajectory, gravity, tension, and projectile motion, discovering how engineering design can influence performance and accuracy.
The ultimate test came down to one simple question:
πŸ“ Which catapult could launch a ping pong ball the furthest?
After some impressive launches, clever engineering, and plenty of cheering from the crowd, one design stood above the rest.
πŸ† Congratulations to P4, whose catapult achieved the greatest distance and claimed the title of Science Week Champions!
A huge thank you to Mrs Lorigan for creating such a hands-on and engaging challenge that brought science to life. It's safe to say there were some future engineers, physicists and inventors on display today!

Symbols, stories and teamwork!
The Year 7s were hard at work in English today with Mrs Stewart as they continued their study of Storm Boy. Through an interactive symbolism task, students collaborated with classmates to unpack the deeper meanings within the film and connect them to its powerful themes.
It was wonderful to see so much engagement, discussion and teamwork throughout the lesson!

πŸ§šβ€β™‚οΈ A message from Puck...
I may have been told not to give away any secrets from the enchanted forest... but what's a mischievous fairy to do? ✨
While sneaking about during rehearsals, I happened to collect a few photographs from St Mary's College's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
And let me tell you... there is magic, mayhem, laughter and a whole lot of Shakespearean mischief waiting to unfold on stage!
🎭 Opening Night is TONIGHT! 🎟️ Tickets are disappearing faster than a fairy in the moonlight.

πŸ’™πŸ’› Hawaiian Spirit for Catholic Mission πŸ’›πŸ’™
Today's Bidwill House Day was about more than just great food and fun activities. It was an opportunity for our students to come together in service of others.
From firing up the BBQ and serving gourmet sausages to selling fruit punch, choc-coated bananas and Hawaiian-inspired treats, the Bidwill House team worked tirelessly to make the day a success. There was even face painting to help spread the tropical spirit across the College!
Their enthusiasm, teamwork and willingness to serve were on full display as they raised funds in support of Catholic Mission, demonstrating the values of compassion, generosity and community that are at the heart of St Mary's College.
A huge thank you to everyone who donated, purchased a treat or stopped by to support the cause. Together, we made a difference while having plenty of fun along the way.
