With bright red uniforms, helmets shining, and big smiles all around, they proudly showed off their teamwork, imagination, and sense of fun.
The children loved pretending to keep everyone safe and learning about the important job firefighters do in our community. 🧯❤️

🍫 Lamington Day Fun at Rugrats Family Daycare!
📅 Date: Monday 21st July 2025
Today was a sweet, sticky, and sensational day at Rugrats Family Daycare as we celebrated Lamington Day! The children were full of excitement as they rolled up their sleeves and got to work transforming sponge cake into delicious Aussie treats.
Instead of baking, we used ready-made sponge cake, which the children helped dip into chocolate icing and then rolled through coconut. From scooping icing sugar to mixing the chocolate icing and coating each piece, the process was full of joy, laughter, and messy hands – just the way we like it!
Maverick and Oliver couldn’t wait to try their finished Lamingtons and gave them a big thumbs up. Jaxx and Matilda were not keen on tasting them, but they still participated with so much enthusiasm in the preparation. This was a wonderful opportunity for the children to explore textures, practice patience, and express their preferences.
This simple yet meaningful activity supported the children’s development in many ways – from enhancing their fine motor skills to building social connections through shared tasks. We also had great conversations about Australian culture and why Lamingtons are such a beloved tradition.
We are so proud of all the children for giving it a go and embracing the experience with such joy. Feel free to chat with your child about their Lamington Day adventure – they might even want to recreate it at home with you.

Chickens in Our Daycare Environment
At Rugrats Family Daycare, we’re proud to provide hands-on learning experiences that connect children with nature and living things. One of the most loved additions to our environment is our small group of chickens.
Having chickens as part of our daycare setting offers the children daily opportunities to develop empathy, responsibility, and a sense of connection to animals and the land. The children actively participate in feeding, gently holding, and caring for the chickens—developing nurturing relationships with them. Through these experiences, children learn about respect for living creatures and how their actions impact the wellbeing of others.
Our chickens spark endless curiosity and conversation. The children are fascinated by the chickens’ behaviours, textures, and daily routines, asking thoughtful questions and making observations. These rich, spontaneous moments support cognitive development and language skills.
Caring for chickens also encourages collaboration and social responsibility. Whether it's taking turns holding the chickens or discussing how to keep them safe and healthy, the children are learning how to work together, negotiate, and solve problems as a group.

• QA3 – Physical Environment: Creating a learning environment that is rich, diverse and sustainable.
• QA5 – Relationships with Children: Building trusting relationships and emotional wellbeing through nurturing experiences.
Theoretical Influences:
• Reggio Emilia: Emphasising the environment as the third teacher, where children learn through exploration and connection.
• Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory: Highlighting how interaction with natural elements supports development across all domains.
• Montessori Approach: Supporting independence and care for living things as part of holistic growth.
8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning:
• Land Links: Children connect to animals and natural cycles through hands-on care.
• Story Sharing & Learning Maps: Children retell their experiences with the chickens, mapping out routines and patterns.
• Community Links: Children learn to care for the chickens as part of a shared community responsibility.
Our chickens do more than just lay eggs—they lay the foundation for compassion, responsibility, and respect in the hearts of our little learners. 🐔💛
