Semantics refers to how meaning is created and interpreted in language. It’s how words, phrases and sentences convey information, ideas and context.
As part of our Multilinguistic Word Study approach, students learn that understanding a word goes beyond knowing a simple definition.
Meaning is shaped by context, word relationships and prior knowledge. The same word can carry different meanings depending on how and where it is used.
By studying semantics, students learn to think more deeply about language and meaning, rather than relying on surface-level understanding.
This supports students to:
✔ interpret words accurately in different contexts
✔ understand nuance and multiple meanings
✔ make more precise vocabulary choices in writing
✔ improve overall reading comprehension
Students also explore how words are connected through synonyms, antonyms and shades of meaning, helping them build a richer and more flexible vocabulary.
Understanding semantics helps students become more thoughtful readers and more precise, effective communicators.
