Last week was a bit of a mixed bag for us. Our Greg travelled to Townsville to facilitate the classroom component of a timber pest program with some up and coming Timber Pest Technicians, while Bruce hung around SEQ to get amongst some Fox management and some preconstruction. Precon never fails to amaze us, as we always find some jobs that leave us wondering "What were they thinking?"

It is great to see pest management businesses seeking to grow and training up new technicians.
Training a new technician in your business is a huge undertaking and it must be done right to achieve the best outcomes for your business.
You know that I believe most of a technicians training happens in the field under the direction of a workplace trainer / mentor, and there can be massive differences between the training a technician receives from business to business.
We don't want to to tell you how to train your technician, but feel we may be able to provide some guidance with your journey.
I thought I might share some thoughts that we take very seriously and strongly urge you to consider.

The Goal of Workplace Training
The goal of workplace instruction is not simply to complete today’s job faster.
The goal is to develop a safe, confident and capable pest management technician who can explain their decisions, follow workplace procedures and progressively perform tasks with less direction.

ProTrain Trainer Tips

Explain why before how. Adults learn more effectively when they understand why a task matters before learning how to perform it.

Coach — don’t rescue. Allow learners to think through problems and develop solutions. Step in when required for safety or to prevent significant error.

Ask more questions. Instead of asking “Do you understand?”, ask the trainee to explain why a particular step or decision is required.

Praise specific behaviours. Recognise what the trainee did well and explain why that behaviour supports safe and effective pest management.

Common Trainer Mistakes
• Talking too much instead of observing learner practice.
• Demonstrating too quickly.
• Forgetting to explain why the task matters.
• Assuming understanding without asking the learner to explain.
• Taking over too early instead of coaching through the issue.
• Ignoring learner questions.
• Focusing only on task completion rather than safe, independent performance.
• Forgetting to provide specific positive feedback.

Remember
Your aim as a workplace trainer is to develop a technician who can think, decide and work safely — not simply imitate you.

Bruce had the luxury of working from Maroochydore door this week with an awesome group of up-and-coming fumigation, technicians from all over the East Coast including Tasmania.
Meanwhile, Greg trekked down to Acacia ridge to spend some time with some awesome up-and-coming general pest technicians.
We are so lucky to get to work with so many up and coming professionals as they work through the classroom components of their pest management and fumigation course.
Bonus to round the week off with our beloved Cowboys getting up over the Broncos.
