Chris' Corner

Just a few thoughts on what I see every day, and just might help you as a parent.

Your teenager stopped talking to you, here's how to fix it....

They used to tell you everything, now you get grunts, rolling eyes, it's not because they don’t care, it's because they're overwhelmed, and they're testing....are you safe enough to handle my real feelings? So what should we do here.....

Stop filling the silence with questions
Stop trying to crack them open, like a safe
Stop making their quiet about our anxiety

Instead, become the parent they'd want to talk to again, calm, present and unshaken by their slience, because silence isn't rejection, it's protection.

The reality is teenagers are dealing with intense identity formation, social failures, academic pressure, aesthetic pressure etc. Their protecting their messy, complicated inner world, because they're not sure how you'll respond, they're protecting their real thoughts...... about relationships.... about failure...about who they are when noone's watching.

This may have come about when they've shared before, maybe it became an interrogation, or maybe this important moment was turned into a "teaching moment" when they just wanted to be heard. They're not being secretive to hurt you, they're being careful as they're still learning what's safe to share. They just need to know that you can sit with their mess without needing to clean it up immediately.

Most importantly, you're still the person they want to open up to more than anyone else.

Pam's Perspective 🩷

I've spent years working alongside parents, children, and whole families navigating their family dynamics and relationships. So much of what keeps us stuck isn't a lack of love, it's old patterns and wounds we never really chose, we just inherited.

A few things I've seen that definitely help along the way:

Behaviour is communication.
What looks like "difficult" is often a child trying to tell you something they don't have words for yet.

Your calm is contagious.
Children, especially those who feel things intensely, borrow their sense of safety from the adults around them.

Connection before correction.
Understanding what's underneath a moment often shifts things faster than trying to manage the moment itself.

You don't have to have all the answers.
Noticing your own patterns is just as powerful as understaning your children's patterns.

Behind every child is a parent hoping they feel understood, supported and truly excited to learn. There is something powerful about watching a child rediscover their confidence and curiosity and when learning feels personal, children begin to see just how capable they truly are.

For years, I’ve specialised in curating unique, cross-curricular learning experiences for homeschooled children. Each one is thoughtfully designed to meet the child where they are, spark their curiosity and help them grow in confidence.

This is not a generic program or an “off the shelf” workbook. It is a highly individual approach that combines engaging projects, real-world learning, creativity and personal mentoring, carefully designed for the child I work with.

Being privileged enough to work with teens every day, just sharing to all parents who may need to hear this......

Sometimes what shows up as defiance, moodiness, or “bad” behavior isn’t rebellion at all. It’s a cry for help. Your child isn’t trying to make your life harder — they’re overwhelmed, dysregulated, or hurting. They just don’t have the language yet to explain what’s really going on inside.

This doesn’t mean we excuse all behavior, of course boundaries still matter. But everything begins to shift when we move from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What’s happening for you?” Everything softens......

That one shift from judgment to curiosity, from frustration to connection, can soften the atmosphere at home and open doors that were previously shut.

If things at home feel tense or disconnected, maybe try this approach. You might be surprised what your child is finally able to show you when they feel safe enough to be seen.

How to guide your children (especially teens) from fear to growth.....

Your anxious teenager doesn't need more comfort, they need more confidence. Here's the difference..... they're anxious about everything, social situations, their future etc. and our instinct as a parent is to protect them from the discomfort, essentially remove the stressors, therefore accommodating the anxiety.

Here's what we're actually doing, we're teaching them that anxiety is dangerous, and that they can't handle discomfort, that avoidance is the solution and anxiety grows in the space of avoidance. Think of their minds like a garden.... the stressors are like weeds, if they avoid them or ignore them, they don't disappear, they grow bigger and crowd out everything good, growing into something big enough to block the light, leading to a tangled mat of weeds.

When we teach our kids to avoid their fears, instead of facing them, it's much better to pull the little weeds when they're young. So here's what actually helps.... help them face it with excitement, not removing the fear, help them feel it and move forward anyway.

Don't make their world smaller, help them build confidence to navigate a bigger world, because confidence isn't the absence of anxiety, it's the ability to act despite it. The teenager who learns to work through anxiety becomes the adult who doesn't hide from challenges, but embraces them.

“🌱 To the Parents Who Truly Care 🌱

After 25 years of walking alongside children as a mentor and tutor—now working with nearly 70 beautiful young souls around the world—I want to share something from the heart.

Every child I meet is full of potential, but too many are also full of doubt.

They need confidence.
They need resilience.
And above all, they need to feel good about who they are—not just for what they achieve, but for being themselves.

Here are some humble observations, based on experience with so many kids....

👉Your words matter. Speak life into them. Not just when they do well, but when they struggle. That’s when they’re listening the most.

👉Praise the process, not just the result. "You worked so hard" is more powerful than "You're so smart." One builds grit, the other builds fear of failure.

👉Let them fail safely. Mistakes are not setbacks—they're stepping stones. Give them space to fall, and your arms to rise again.

👉Model what you want them to learn. If you want them to be kind, show kindness. If you want them to be confident, show how you face your own fears.

👉And most importantly: Remind them every day that they are loved—no matter their grades, their wins, their losses or their mood.

I believe in children fiercely, but they need adults who believe in them just as much. If you’ve read this far, remember that you’re making a bigger difference than you know.

Some words that may speak to you right now....

There's comes a moment when you get tired of carrying your past. Tired of replaying what went wrong, to understand what your past taught you, to feel what shaped you in every experience... in every heartbreak. Mistakes and celebrations are all carved out in the wisdom that lives within you now. You can't be open and present if you're still hiding the parts of your story that have once hurt.

Open up to your true self, as this true self isn't who you were before life changed you, it's who you are now, due to every experience you've accumulated. Are you still at war with the past? You never need to go back, you just need to open up to the person you are now.

There’s No Such Thing as a Perfect Parent—But There Is a Growing One 💛

Dear parents,

If no one’s told you lately—you’re doing more than enough. 🌱

In a world that constantly whispers (or shouts) messages about how parenting should look, it’s easy to fall into the trap of perfection. You might feel like you have to say the right things, respond the right way, never lose your patience, and always have the right answers. But the truth is—there’s no such thing as a perfect parent.

There is, however, something far more powerful:
✨ a present parent
🌿 a growing parent
🪞 a self-aware parent

Your children don’t need you to be flawless. They need you to be real ❤️
To show them that it’s okay to make mistakes, to learn, to apologise, to take a breath and try again. 🧘‍♀️ When you model growth, they learn to grow. When you show humility, they learn empathy. When you show up—not as someone who knows it all, but as someone who’s willing to learn—they feel safe, seen, and supported. 🫶

Take the pressure off. 🧺 You are not raising a child to fit into a mold.
You are guiding a whole human being—
🧠 with thoughts
💫 emotions
🌈 dreams
🌊 and fears.

And along the way, you’re growing too. 🪴

So here’s a gentle invitation......... Observe yourself, not with judgment, but with curiosity and love. Notice how you react when your child is upset. What story do you tell yourself in those moments? What version of “being a good parent” are you trying to live up to—and is it one that feels loving to you?

The more you understand your own patterns, the more you can consciously choose how to respond, rather than react. And with every moment of reflection, you give your child a better model of how to move through life with courage and heart.

You don’t have to get it right every time. 🩹
You just have to keep showing up—open-hearted and willing to grow.

❤️

As parents, we all want to give our children the very best. But it's just as important to take care of ourselves and acknowledge what we’re feeling along the way. When we understand and support our own emotional needs, we’re better able to show up for our kids in the way they need us most.

1 - Shame vs compassion... You're not failing, you're learning in real time
2 - Guilt vs curiosity.... instead of " I should've known, try "what can I learn?"
3 - Fear vs connection... We don't need to control everything, just stay close
4 - Perfection vs presence... It's not about doing it all right, it's just showing up
5 - Blame vs teamwork.... you're in this together, you grow together

As parents, let's stop carrying the load alone, maybe let's parent (for you) with more peace 🙂

Hi parents, 5 homeschooled children later, the teaching of thousands of students in schools, having the privilege of mentoring kids for 20+ years..... just wanted to humbly share my experience. Above all, we need to teach our children these core ideas, through our words, and more importantly, our actions, to help them become the amazing, aware and heart-felt adults we want them to be:

👉Happiness is not the absence of problems, its the ability to deal with them.
👉Don't focus on making your presence known, rather have your absence felt.
👉Feeling sad after a decision doesnt mean it was the wrong decision.
👉The lesson you struggle with will repeat itself until you learn from it.
👉Stress doesn't necessarily come from doing too much, oftem because you're doing too little of what makes you feel most alive.
👉Never regret a single day in your life...... good days give happiness, bad days give experience, the worst days give lessons, and the best days give memories.
