Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

Our nursery has been full of stories, sensory play and lots of sticky little fingers!

While exploring That’s Not My Meerkat, children compared textures from the story with everyday objects, discovering what felt smooth, fluffy, rough and spongey. They then created their own meerkats using collage materials and a very generous helping of sticky, drippy PVA glue!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar also inspired plenty of fun as children filled and transported baskets with fruit and vegetables, cooked up a storm in the play kitchen and shared lots of giggles while uncovering hidden veggies in the sensory box.

Who knew language and literacy could be so messy and fun?

This week, our nursery children explored early literacy through stories and hands-on play. During Dear Zoo, children eagerly lifted the flaps, predicted which animal was hiding, and joined in with making animal sounds. They extended the story through imaginative retelling using animals hidden inside boxes.
Our heuristic treasure baskets also encouraged curious exploration, with children stacking rings and bangles, opening pockets and zippers, and investigating textured treasures including sponges, brushes, loofahs and fabrics alongside That’s Not My Meerkat. These experiences supported sensory discovery, problem-solving, communication and early descriptive language. What a wonderful space for our youngest learners to thrive!
