This week we had the privilege of welcoming RFDS legend and AFT alumnus, Captain Mark Davies, back to the AFT stage to share his experience flying for one of Australia’s most iconic aviation organisations. Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section)

Mark gave our ATPL students an incredible firsthand insight into a career with the Royal Flying Doctor Service Queensland, including the minimum entry requirements for RFDS pilots, career pathways, and an overview of the interview and selection process.

He also shared some great interview tips, encouraging our students to think carefully about the depth of knowledge behind their answers, rather than simply giving the answer they think an interviewer wants to hear. Give the interview opportunity the preparation, commitment and respect it deserves - you have worked hard to get to this point in your career so dig deep before the interview!

A career with the RFDS is one built on purpose, challenge and adventure.

RFDS pilots take the King Air into some of the most remote and remarkable corners of Queensland, where no two days are the same, every mission matters, and every flight has the potential to make a genuine difference.

And there was something pretty special about having Mark back at AFT. He once sat in our classroom, studied these same ATPL subjects and worked towards the same goal as the pilots sitting in front of him today. Now, he returns as an experienced RFDS Captain, showing our students exactly where their ATPL journey can take them.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear headsets.

We love nothing more than hearing where our past students end up, and Louis’ journey is a pretty incredible one!

Just three years ago, Louis Cannington was sitting in the AFT classroom completing his 7 CPL(H) theory subjects. Today, he’s living the dream as a Drill Pilot in the remote Canadian Arctic.

Based at Angilak, deep within the Arctic Circle, Louis supports uranium exploration operations in one of the most remote environments on Earth — around 500 km from the nearest food or water source, with no roads or conventional landing strips. Helicopters are the lifeline.

As a Drill Pilot, Louis uses incredible precision and long-line skills to position and support specialised drilling equipment across remote terrain, often described as “Lego building with a helicopter.”

It’s one of the most technically demanding helicopter roles in the industry, requiring exceptional accuracy, consistency and skill.

Louis’s journey is a brilliant example of where a career in helicopters can take you. From the AFT classroom to the Arctic in just three years!

We’re so proud of you Louis! Congratulations on everything you’ve achieved so far.

We can’t wait to see where the helicopter takes you next!

What a night for our very own Operations Manager, Vanessa Adamson, finalist for Professional Business Woman of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards.

We could not be prouder. 🤩

Vanessa has been an integral part of Advanced Flight Theory for more than three decades, helping grow AFT from a dream into the organisation it is today and playing a significant role in supporting more than 26,000 professional pilots throughout their aviation careers.

Vanessa often talks about the four words that have shaped her career: purpose, people, passion and privilege.

And those words are reflected in everything she brings to AFT.

Purpose, in understanding the importance of the work we do.

People, in the relationships she has built with students, pilots, industry partners and the wider aviation community.

Passion, in the energy and enthusiasm she continues to bring to aviation after more than 30 years.

And privilege, in recognising the opportunity we have to help pilots build extraordinary careers and make a genuine difference within our industry.

Beyond AFT, Vanessa is incredibly passionate about supporting women in aviation through scholarships, mentoring, advocacy, connection and her involvement with organisations including the Australian Women Pilots' Association.

Whether she is supporting a pilot taking the next step, connecting people with opportunities, or championing those already forging incredible careers, Vanessa continually uses her experience, networks and position to help others.

While she didn’t take home the award on Friday night, being recognised alongside such an outstanding group of Sunshine Coast business women is something we are incredibly proud to celebrate.

Congratulations Vanessa. We are so proud of everything you have contributed to Advanced Flight Theory, to the aviation industry and, most importantly, to the thousands of people whose careers you have helped shape along the way. 🚁❤️✈️
