Want a fun experiment that you can do in the kitchen that explores the state of an item?
Boil the jug and get ready!
Um, did you notice the steam. Let your kids know that the water is so hot (which means adults only to touch) that it turns from a liquid to a gas and evaporates!
But if you were to take that same liquid and make it freezing cold, then you would end up with a solid that would be ice.
Time how long it takes to make a liquid a gas and solid.
AND try and catch some of the gas in a glass and watch it become a liquid again!
Think of all the language skills you’ll be developing as you chat about what happened and what might happen!

Not everything will go to plan. Sometimes things go wrong and it’s important to model persistence, and the ability to accept your mistakes.
Your child is constantly looking to you for ways to cope.
So model keeping calm, and show your child that it’s okay to make mistakes.
You can start again, or sometimes mistakes make things all that much better!
After all a mistake (or “failing”) is just learning how to do something.

Did you know that when used in the best way, screen time can provide great learning opportunities for your child?
One of the best types of screen time is interactive content.
This means that your child has to do something (aka interact) with the screen. This includes asking the child a question and pausing to wait for a response, or encouraging them to get up and move.
It removes them from being a passive watcher, to actively learning and taking on the information!
Did you know that all Lipsy Loo programs are interactive for this very reason?
Other examples are Blues Clues & You and Dora the Explorer.

Is your child a visual learner?
Did you know that it’s great to use visual cue cards to help them know and understand what’s coming next?? It can relieve anxiety, teach the, routine and increase their independence!
For example, you might set up a weekly schedule so they know what days are preschool days, when they go to their grandparents, to swimming and so on.
But you can also use them for routine times, such as to get dressed, pack their bag and put their shoes on!
Want some suggestions? DM me and I’ll send you my favourites!

Washing the toys is a great game to play at home, which extends on those self-help skills and really promotes independence.
This can be done with a small tub of soapy water and a wash cloth! You can build on language skills using descriptive language (e.g. clean/dirty), sequencing (e.g. first we ...) as well as comprehension (e.g. Why do we wash toys? What do we need? What do we do next?)
It's also a great opportunity to start the conversation around the items that we already have, taking care of them, and potentially giving some away to those who might not have as much as us.

Have you ever wondered what school readiness is?
Well, if so, you’re in luck because I have written a blog post around this (and broken it into the main skilled areas!)
School readiness is so much more than your child knowing their alphabet and numbers.

In early August, there was an article that spoke about the starting school age after the NSW Education Minister, Sarah Mitchell announced changing this to the year that the child turns 6.
This is something that Victoria are also looking at as they overhaul their early education sector.
There are benefits to this happening, but also some that might cause further strain for parents, such as affordability of care as a big one!
Did you know that over the years, the age that you can start school has changed across the varied states?
How old were you when you started school?

Want a fun game for this Sunday?
The one is another of my favourite books, which most people know! ‘Where is the Green Sheep?’ and will involve a little drawing!
Draw some green sheep, cut them out, and get hiding around the house.
Use positional language (e.g. under, on, next to) as you’re describing the sheep that you’ve found!
Save this one later or share with other green sheep lovers! 💚
