Adventurous literacy experiences are all about diving into exciting books and exploring different worlds, cultures, and mysteries. It's like going on thrilling journeys and to do this we may have to look into The Simple View of Reading. ✨ Like a magical key that unlocks the amazing world of reading. It's all about two super important skills: decoding and comprehension.

Imagine, if someone's decoding skills were not the best, for example dyslexic students, they might still have awesome language comprehension but struggle with reading the written word.

And hey, if someone's language comprehension isn't top-notch, like hyperlexic students, they might be able to decode words like a champ but have a bit of trouble understanding what they read or hear.

Pretty cool, right? It all comes down to the connection between the mastery of the code and unravelling the meaning to successfully embark on the adventurous world of literacy! 📚✨

Here are a handful of helpful hints on how to create a reliable routine for kids! 💤⚡️💥

1. Set consistent wake-up and bedtime schedules: Having a regular sleep routine can help children with special needs feel more rested and ready for the day.

2. Create a visual schedule: Use pictures or symbols to outline the daily activities and tasks. This visual aid can provide a clear structure and help your child understand what to expect throughout the day.

3. Incorporate sensory breaks: If your child benefits from sensory breaks, schedule regular breaks throughout the day to engage in calming or stimulating activities that cater to their sensory needs.

4. Plan designated study or homework time: Set aside a specific time each day for your child to focus on their schoolwork. This can help them develop good study habits and maintain consistency in their learning routine.

Remember, every child is unique, so feel free to tailor the routine to your child’s specific needs and preferences. 😊📚

BIMDAS BIDMAS BODMAS

The Mnemonic stands for: brackets, indices/order, division, multiplication, addition, subtraction. This Order of Operations is learnt in year 6 in Australia and essential to obtain a correct answer and solve any equation. The foundations of this skill is developed from the very beginning of mathematical practice with the basic 4 operations which are add, subtract, multiply and divide.

If your child is in high school and struggling with Algebra, they may need to go back this Order of Operations (BIMDAS BIDMAS BODMAS) or even back to the basics of addition subtraction multiplication and division. Those last two operations can be tricky sometimes!

International Day of Education is a wonderful occasion to focus on learning not just for children but parents and teachers as well. Here are four ways to support your child to go back to school for the new school year! 🙌

1. Establish a routine: Creating a consistent schedule can provide structure and stability for all children. Begin to practice your routine with your bed time routine and morning routine. This will create structure and make transition easier when school starts.

2. Communicate with the school: Engaging in open communication with teachers and staff will ensure that your child’s needs are being met and you can address any concerns.

3. Support systems: Ensure your child has a support system of friends, family and professionals for advice and encourage social opportunities for your child.

4. Advocate for your child: Be their biggest advocate and work closely with the school to ensure they receive the support they need.

I hope these tips help! Let me know if there’s anything I can assist you with. 😊

Over these holidays I got the chance to read more about the experiences of Autistic people from new sources such as which aims to help children, parents and teachers to understand and appreciate autistic people for who they are.

A few things from Monique’s book about her parenting experiences stood out that I hope others can take on board:

1. Get the right support around you from friends, family and therapists. Not just for your child but as a parent.

2. Every individual is different and a diagnosis or label doesn’t define a person.

3. When your child finds their passion, no matter how far fetched, let them run with it and let them pursue it.

To the Goldfields! by Rachel Tonkin

A great little book about the Australian gold rush through the eyes of a little boy. A story with wonderful illustrations and it is a great introduction to the gold rush, eureka stockade and for history lovers. I first came across this book a few years ago when teaching year 5 and used it to accompany the history lesson about life in the Australian colonies and cold rush era. I personally love stories with uniqueness and beautiful artwork.

There once was a writer so bold,
Whose handwriting was quite uncontrolled,
His letters they sprawled,
And his words they brawled,
But his stories were worth being told.

I left Symone Weatley-Hey's presentation on building advocacy through community at the ADHD Conference 2023 feeling empowered. Her message has inspired me to continue promoting awareness of learning difficulties, and encourage my community to take action to create positive change.

Dyscalculia is a less well known learning difficulty unlike dyslexia, it affects how one understands mathematics and the concepts within mathematics.
