This morning, despite the Melbourne winter chill, our community came together for a special cheque presentation to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Peter Mac holds deep personal significance for me. As my late wife Usha's carer throughout her 21-year cancer journey, it became a place of hope, compassion, and exceptional care. It is a place made extraordinary by the dedicated clinicians, researchers, nurses, support staff, and volunteers who work tirelessly to support patients and families every day.

Usha often reminded me that good health is a privilege we can easily take for granted until it is challenged. Yet through her courage and resilience, she also taught me that some of life's most meaningful moments emerge from how we navigate adversity and support one another through difficult times.

Today's donation reflects a community united by compassion, generosity, and a shared commitment to improving the lives of patients, carers, and families. It is also a tribute to the remarkable work undertaken at Peter Mac in advancing patient care, research, innovation, and hope.

Building meaningful partnerships begins with a shared purpose, trust, and a commitment to addressing real community needs.

The recent delivery of an Olympus BX41 - a high-grade clinical microscope to the Clinical Diagnosis and Education Laboratory at Labasa Hospital in Fiji is an example of what can be achieved when healthcare professionals, community organisations, government agencies, and logistics partners work together toward a common goal.

Remote regional hospitals across Fiji and the Pacific often face challenges in accessing specialised medical equipment. Strengthening laboratory diagnostic capabilities not only supports clinicians in making timely, informed decisions that ultimately improve patient care and health outcomes but also provides staff with professional development opportunities.

This initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Pacific Region Infectious Diseases Association (PRIDA), Pathology Queensland, Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology (SNP), the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services, the laboratory team at Labasa Hospital, Fiji Airways, and Reach 4 Your Future Foundation (R4YFF).

A special thank you to Wendy Jackson (PRIDA), Orisi Cabenatabua (Labasa Hospital Laboratory Team), Col Thomas (Microscope Technician - SNP), Lanoma Singh (R4YFF), and Makarita Tikoduadua (Ministry of Health and Medical Services) for their leadership and support in bringing this project to fruition.

The value of this initiative extends beyond a microscope. It represents healthcare equity, capacity building, knowledge sharing, and a collective commitment to improving health outcomes for communities across the Pacific.

A very important reminder, when communities come together for a common cause, they connect, engage in meaningful conversations, and express gratitude to those who have stood beside others with empathy, care, and support. These are the values and principles that define our shared humanity and extend far beyond our workplaces, institutions, and homes.

Together, we raised more than $11,000 in support of Palliative Care at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. More importantly, we raised awareness, shared stories of courage and resilience, and celebrated the compassion that underpins exceptional care.

Our annual Cancer Care and Research High Tea was a wonderful reminder of what can be achieved when communities, healthcare professionals, educators, and volunteers come together for a common purpose.

This year's event showcased the growing impact of our programs—from Creative and Critical Thinking workshops that empower young learners, to humanitarian healthcare initiatives that strengthen patient care capacity in Fiji.

We were privileged to hear from inspiring speakers who shared their insights on compassionate patient-centred care, research, humanitarian medical missions, and the importance of developing future generations of leaders and changemakers.

A significant milestone highlighted at the event was the successful recovery and delivery of 26 tonnes of medical equipment and healthcare supplies from a major Victorian hospital decommissioning project. Through partnerships with healthcare institutions, clinicians, and charitable organisations, these resources will help enhance patient care in Fiji's public hospitals.

Together, we raised vital funds to support cancer care, research, palliative care, and patient wellbeing while continuing to build programs that invest in people, communities, and future generations.

Social impact programs play a vital role in shaping academic and leadership experiences that produce well-rounded, career-ready graduates — graduates who are industry-engaged, community-connected, and deeply attuned to people and their needs.

On Sunday, 17 May 2026, the Swinburne community stood proudly alongside Reach 4 Your Future Foundation and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation at our annual Cancer Care and Research High Tea held at The Hotel Windsor Melbourne.

What made this event truly special was not only the fundraising outcome, but the genuine human connection shared throughout the afternoon — stories of courage, resilience, compassion, caregiving, survivorship, and hope.

Together, our community raised an incredible $11,000.00 to support palliative care initiatives for cancer patients, carers, and families navigating some of life’s most difficult moments.

A remarkable $4,000.00 contribution came directly from the Swinburne community, demonstrating the power of collective compassion and social impact in action.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous supporting partners: Fiji Airways, Vietnam Airlines, Crowne Plaza Resort & Spa Fiji, J.W.
