🔥 PRETEND BUSHFIRE EVACUATION 🔥

Today we practised a pretend bushfire evacuation at Bush Explorers Family Day Care, testing out an alternate evacuation route towards the Hanging Rock area instead of our usual Malua Bay Beach evacuation point.

It was a great opportunity for the children to practise staying together, listening carefully, following instructions and moving safely when our normal evacuation route may not be suitable. 🌿🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Living surrounded by bushland means being prepared for different emergency situations is especially important. Regularly practising different routes and scenarios helps build children’s confidence and ensures I am prepared to respond quickly and safely.

A great learning experience in emergency preparedness — practice, reflect, adapt and keep everyone safe! ❤️

🚲🌿 Balance Bike Adventures! 🌿🚲

From 17 months to 3.5 years, our little Bush Explorers are building confidence, coordination and independence as they learn to ride their balance bikes and pedal bikes! 💕

There’s so much learning happening as children practise balance, steering, spatial awareness, coordination, strength and safe movement — all while having lots of fun outdoors. 🌿✨

I love watching each child develop at their own pace, from those first careful steps on the bike to confidently gliding along! 🙌🚲

🔥 PRETEND FIRE EVACUATION DRILL 🔥

Today at Bush Explorers Family Day Care, we practised our fire evacuation procedure using a pretend fire in our FDC outdoor area.

The children were alerted to the pretend emergency and we calmly and safely evacuated away from the fire through the side gate, moving together to our designated safe area. 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to practise an important safety routine in a calm, age-appropriate way. We talked about listening to instructions, staying together, moving quickly and safely, and knowing where to go if there was ever a real emergency. ❤️

Of course, this was only pretend — learning through play and practice helps children feel confident and prepared. 👏

🌱🥦🍅 Harvest Day at Bush Explorers! 🍅🥦🌱

Today we headed into our veggie garden to see what was ready to pick! The children helped harvest our broccoli, cauliflower and tomatoes — straight from our garden to our hands. ❤️

Our veggies might not be supermarket-sized 😂, but they are fresh, homegrown and grown with lots of love! The children are learning where our food comes from, caring for plants, noticing when food is ready to harvest and enjoying the excitement of growing our own food.

There’s something pretty special about growing it, picking it and eating it! 🌿🥦🍅

🚨 PRETEND WILD WEATHER LOCKDOWN – THIS IS A PRACTICE SCENARIO 🚨

🌧️ WILD WEATHER LOCKDOWN 🌧️

Today we practised our wild weather lockdown procedure as we imagined extreme weather bringing heavy rain, strong winds and flooding to our outdoor environment.

The children quickly and calmly moved inside to our safe area while we talked about why we need to stay indoors during dangerous weather. We discussed heavy rain, strong winds, flooding and keeping ourselves safe.

It was a wonderful opportunity to turn an important emergency procedure into meaningful learning — building the children’s understanding of safety, listening to instructions, staying together and responding calmly when conditions change. 💙

Safety first, always! 🌧️🏠🌿

🐍 SNAKE LOCKDOWN — PRETEND PLAY! 🐍

Don’t worry… our snake visitor was only pretend! 😂🐍

Today we turned our outdoor area into a fun snake lockdown scenario to help the children practise what we would do if we really spotted a snake.

Belinda called “Snake lockdown!” and all the children worked together to move safely inside, following instructions and staying together. Once safely inside, we talked about why we never approach or touch a snake and what we should do if we see one.

The children loved joining in with this real-life safety scenario — learning important safety skills through pretend play, discussion and hands-on experiences. ❤️

A little bit of pretend play can create some very important learning! 🌿🐍

🎨 Let children be the artists!

I believe children’s artwork should be about creativity, freedom and self-expression, rather than making something that looks like an adult’s example.

By providing paint, drawing materials and collage without stencils or templates, children can follow their own ideas and create in their own unique way.

There is no ‘right’ way to make art. Every scribble, colour choice and creation is an opportunity for children to express their thinking, develop confidence and proudly say, “I made this!” ❤️
