Hummingbird Dojo Creating Adaptive Capacity Hummingbirds achieve their purpose with extraordinary effectiveness and elegance. Yes, they fly backwards. These stages are related.

They do it because they can reorganise at will, moving in any direction: up and down, left and right, forward and back. They even fly upside down for a while! Importantly all these possibilities mean they can hover until deciding what needs to be done. Humans, too, have the capacity to reorganise at will. Unfortunately, it is halted prematurely. What is needed is a renewal of a natural human process. As we develop more of our latent capacities difficult problems become easier. Our approach tackles issues in a two-stage approach:

1.Develop your latent capacities.
2.Use your existing and new-found abilities to live your life fully and creatively. Progress in one stage reinforces the potency of the other. When we organise ourselves to achieve our purposes, important options are not available. When our limitations become obvious and inconvenient we may try even harder. This strategy most often fails. Effort is wasted when it is put into improving performance directly. It pays to put energy into becoming better people, people who can access capacities and developing abilities that support improved performance. This is capacity building at a fundamental level, Adaptive Capacity. It pays to focus initially on what we can’t stop doing - our habits. Once they were essential survival skills. Now they limit us. The key is to move from a position where our habits dominate to a position where they are one possible pattern among many. Then performance improves naturally and sustainably.
