Victorian Steam Locomotive Company The V499 Project is Australia's 1st public new-build locomotive - A Victorian Railways' V class 2-8-0

The V499 Project was set up with the aim of building and operating an extinct class of locomotive of the Victorian Railways system - the Vauclain Compound V Class, 2-8-0. Where as most surviving types of locomotives are preserving the 1950s, the V499 Project will be recreating the 1900s.

The V499 Story

The V499 Project was set up with the aim of building and operating an extinct class of locomotive of the Victorian Railways system - the Vauclain Compound V Class, 2-8-0. Where as most surviving types of locomotives are preserving the 1950s, the V499 Project is recreating the 1900s.

The project was launched in June 2011 and to date we have made fantastic progress on engineering drawings (which have all started from nothing as the originals do not exist anymore) as well as building brand new components. In 2017 the cab of the locomotive was built and delivered to Maldon, on the Victorian Goldfields Railway and in late-2018 the smokebox (front of the engine) was built too.

Moving ahead we are about to launch the most ambitious fundraising task so far in order to raise the money to build the locomotive frames - in the region of $300,000Au. Keep an eye out on this page to follow us, see all our updates and photos/videos.
