Recycling (yellow bin) for Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Singleton. Helping residents recycle right — so your waste isn't wasted.

With commentary from Barry the bin chicken (the OG binfluencer) and help from Hunter the Recycling Retriever. Hunter Resource Recovery manages recycling and waste education across Cessnock, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Singleton councils. We're here to cut through the confusion — because most recycling mistakes aren't laziness, they're misinformation. And misinformation is Barry the bin chicken's

Ever "just chuck it in" when you're not sure? You're not alone. ♻️🤔

Bazza's new series, Street Sort, is putting Hunter Valley locals to the test.
This week's myth? Wishcycling. 🤞

Guessing feels like the safe option — but it's not. Putting the wrong stuff in recycling can contaminate the whole load.

✅ Not sure? Check hrr.com.au or the sticker on your bin before you bin it.

👀 Watch now and stop guessing for good.

🦢 Bazza's pre-bin night checklist is here.

Bin night looks different for everyone in the Hunter — so whenever yours rolls around this week, save this and tick it off before the yellow lid goes out.

♻️ RECYCLABLE vs 🌱 COMPOSTABLE vs ⏳ BIODEGRADABLE

Confused? You're not alone.

Just because something is compostable or biodegradable doesn't mean it belongs in your recycling bin.

Watch to learn:
✅ What recyclable means
✅ What compostable means
✅ What biodegradable means

Knowing the difference helps keep recycling streams cleaner and improves the quality of materials that can be turned into new products.

A recycling mistake many of us don't realise we're making. ♻️😬

Bazza's new series, Street Sort, is putting Hunter locals to the test.

This week's myth? Bagged recycling. 🛍️♻️

It looks organised, but it's actually one of the biggest recycling mistakes. Bags can't be sorted, so everything inside can end up going to landfill.

✅ Empty it loose into the recycling bin.

Bazza and Hunter hit the racks for National Thrift Shop Day, and mate, the fashion sense is questionable but the mission's solid. 🧥👀

One person's cast-off is another's new favourite jumper. Before it heads to landfill, could it live another life on someone else's back? Op shops keep good stuff in circulation and out of landfill — that's a win either way.

Ever stood at the bin, squinting at a little triangle, wondering what in the flamin' heck it actually means? 🤔 You're not alone.

Here's what most people get wrong: that numbered triangle isn't a recycling symbol — it just tells you the type of plastic. 😳 "Compostable" doesn't mean recyclable either. And the label that actually tells you what to do? It's the little tag that says Recyclable / Conditionally Recyclable / Check Locally.

So before you bin it — check the label. 👀

Bazza thought he'd seen it all. Then a tradie rocked up and tried to fit an ENTIRE reno in the recycling bin. Timber, cement bags, insulation, PVC pipe — the lot. 🦢🔧

Spoiler: none of it belongs there. Bazza sets him straight (and shows him where it actually goes).

Big stuff like timber and insulation? Skip bin's ya best mate. Smaller bits — general waste'll do ya just fine.

Alright Hunter, it's the first Friday of the month, which means it's officially… CONFESSION TIME. 🗑️

What's the recycling mistake you've been carrying around? Wrong bin? Bagged your recycling? Chucked something dodgy in the yellow and walked away fast?
No judgement here. Barry's not perfect either. There's a reason he doesn't talk about the polystyrene incident.

Drop your confession below and we'll tell you what to do next time — no lectures, promise. 👇
