Is your teenager is doing dance at school, but needs more work on the fundamentals?

If your teen is struggling with elements of their dance course at school, basic ballet technique can help. All other dance techniques are underpinned by what they’ll learn in ballet.

Our Teen Introduction to Ballet class is designed for ages 13–17 with little or no dance experience and is the perfect complement to dance studies at school. Often these things can get overlooked in a big group class and if your teen is struggling, maybe some back to basics are in order.

King Louis XIV as "Apollo" c. 1653.

French King from 1643 to 1715, King Louis XIV was a great lover of ballet and responsible for the codifying of its basic steps and patterns. At this time, ballet existed in the Royal Courts of Italy and France, and movements were designed to emulate grace and courtly behaviour reminding the subjects of the Kings power and status. King Louis loved to perform as part of the elaborate banquets and performances and is pictured here in his iconic role as 'Apollo' in Ballet Royal de la Nuit (Royal Ballet of the Night).

In 1661, Louis founded the Académie Royale de Danse and ordered his private tutor Pierre Beauchamp to come up with a system of notation to record ballets and to codify the basic steps and positions. To this day, ballet terminology remains in French from Beauchamps influence.

For a lot of teenagers, ballet has been a quiet dream. Something they’ve watched, admired, and always thought: "I wish I'd learned that."

Well, now's the time.

They can join our Teen Introduction to Ballet class at Magill Community Centre. This class has been created especially for young people aged 13 to 17 with little or no ballet experience.

Beginners are not just welcome here, they're exactly who this class is for.

In a warm, friendly environment, they’ll be introduced to the foundations of Classical Ballet like posture, foot and arm positions, and basic steps. And yes, why everyone seems to be speaking French!
