The Premier’s Reading Challenge encourages students to discover the joy of reading, improve their literacy skills and enjoy amazing stories. The challenge runs for 12 weeks from 23 March to 12 June 2026. To complete the challenge:
Kindergarten to Year 6 students read 12 or more books
Year 7 to 12 students read 6 or more books. Reading isn’t just about books. Students can also log:
Short stories
Graphic novels
eBooks
Poetry
Audiobooks
Literary-based podcasts
Blogs
Comic Books Registrations are open. For more information, visit the Premier’s Reading Challenge website. In a new initiative for 2026, a story time session hosted by author Alton Walley will be released on the Department of Education YouTube channel each week of the challenge, encouraging classrooms to read along and log a book together. In 2025, more than 26,000 students logged an incredible 420,000 titles. Participants who log their reading each week will go in the draw to win great prizes, with top-performing individuals and schools recognised at the end of the challenge. At the end of the challenge, students receive a certificate signed by the Premier, celebrating and rewarding their amazing efforts. Benefits of the challenge: Reading offers many benefits and the Premier’s Reading Challenge makes it even more exciting! The challenge encourages reading, gives students a goal to work towards and nurtures a lifelong love of books. Parents play a key role in developing great reading habits. The challenge gives families a fantastic chance to read together. Reading is a wonderful way to unwind, escape to new worlds and discover incredible authors. So, grab a book and get ready for this year’s challenge!
