Faith-based violence diminishes us all

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The NSW Ecumenical Council has called for a renewed commitment to peace and respect for faith communities following recent violence and threats of violence.

"We are appalled by recent incidents of racial and religious intolerance and call on people of all faiths to work together to build strong friendships built on trust and mutual respect," NSW Ecumenical Council President Father James Collins said.

Fr Collins said the Council was committed to the values of love and justice, to the "golden rule" embodied in the Christian scriptures. One should treat others as one would like to be treated and therefore strive to be at peace with all people.

Incidents of disrespect of any faith or person because of their race, faith, s*x, s*xuality, gender status, disability or wealth, diminish us all.

Instances of hate speech, criminal acts against persons of a particular faith and singling out others for unfavourable treatment due to their faith or any other attribute, tears at the fabric of our shared community life and creates and deepens divisions within the community.
