This Saturday, at Alumni Reconnect, join our ecological tour to discover the flora and fauna of the Macquarie University campus. Stroll along the university lake, listen to the frogs, and see where bats go fishing. The tour will head into some of the last remaining remnants of the critically endangered Sydney Turpentine–Ironbark Forest, where natural tree hollows provide habitat for a wide range of native wildlife.
The tour will finish by exploring how Macquarie University students and academics use this unique living laboratory to better understand how to support species now and into the future.

We have been asking our community what being nature-positive means to them, ahead of this weekend's event - Alumni Reconnect: Nature Positive Pathways toward a Sustainable Future.
Today, the spotlight is on Geoff Bilney, Indigenous Partnerships Manager at Macquarie University, who has shared with us what it means to him as a Pitjantjatjara man:
“Nature positive, for me as a Pitjantjatjara man, is about honouring the relationship we have with Country caring for the land in ways that sustain culture, community and future generations. When we look after Country, Country looks after us”
Be sure to join Geoff as he leads the Walking on Country tour on Wallumattagal campus this weekend, as one of the activities available to participate in for Open Day and Alumni Reconnect.

On International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we’re proud to celebrate alumna Dr Vanessa Pirotta, whose career, impact and commitment to giving back continue to inspire the next generation of women scientists.

A marine scientist, Vanessa champions ocean conservation through clear, accessible science communication- engaging audiences from Play School to political decision makers. She is a 2025 Eureka Prize winner and an AFR 100 Woman of Influence.

Through her involvement in our Girls to Graduates STEMM Camp, she continues to inspire young women to see a future for themselves in science.

We’re also delighted to share that Vanessa has recently commenced as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University, mentoring and teaching future scientists!
