Steve Ellis made the bold decision to leave a decades-long career in banking and start again as an apprentice electrician. 🔌💡

Steve wanted a future-proof career that offered hands-on work, job security and the opportunity to make a tangible difference. With support from TAFE NSW - Miller and an apprenticeship with Machine Automation Technologies, he is now a fourth-year industrial electrician.

“It’s one of the best decisions of my life,” Steve says. 😄

Steve’s story reflects a growing trend, with more Australians reskilling and moving into trade and technical careers. From walking into a TAFE NSW classroom surrounded by young people to discovering a rewarding new profession, Steve proves that age is no barrier to learning something new and building a career you love. 👏

What started as work experience on a building site has turned into a rewarding career for Dubbo apprentices and lifelong friends Molly and Meg 🛠️

After enrolling in the Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) at TAFE NSW Dubbo, the pair are now building their skills, confidence and careers while helping deliver projects across the region.

For Molly, the decision to pursue a trade felt natural: "From a young age I knew that a hands-on, outdoor career was what I wanted for my future. Three years on, I get to help build people's dream homes."

Meg says choosing a trade opened the door to a career she's passionate about: "I've found a job I love and now have a promising career ahead of me."

Caleb Morris, TAFE NSW Carpentry Teacher, has seen firsthand the impact they're making - "They've gone from strength to strength, showing that determination and an eye for detail are valuable skills in trade-based professions."

Molly and Meg's journey is a great reminder that there are many pathways to success, and with the right support, students can turn their interests into careers that make a real difference in their communities.

IPROWD 2026 Graduation | Honouring Legacy, Building Futures 👮🏽

Congratulations to Josh and his fellow graduates from the 2026 IPROWD program, marking a milestone in both their journeys and 15 years of impact at Eora.

IPROWD supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with the skills, confidence and pathways to pursue careers in the NSW Police Force or the Australian Federal Police. 🚓💫

Josh received the RACAPTIS Award (Redfern Aboriginal Community and Police Together in Sport), nominated by NSW Police, recognising respect, leadership, community connection, teamwork and positive engagement. He was also co-awarded the Gibbs Award for outstanding dedication, academic excellence, and leadership as a top IPROWD student.

For Josh, the experience was deeply rewarding. The program strengthened his cultural identity and offered real-world insight: "We went out to north-west NSW and saw community policing firsthand. There was a sergeant there who had completed IPROWD. She was an incredible role model."

Through mentorship from AFP and NSW Police officers, Josh and his peers have taken the next step, applying to join the force. 🚔📝

As part of the 15th anniversary cohort, Josh reflects with pride, honouring those who came before him and carrying that legacy forward: "It makes me grateful for the people that have carved the way." 🖤💛❤️

Anneliesje is supporting future Indigenous educators 📚✨

TAFE NSW teacher Anneliesje Brown is passionate about guiding young Aboriginal students into meaningful careers in education. Through the School-Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) program, she guides students to complete their Certificate III in School Based Education Support (CHC30221). They gain real experience in schools. Many, like Amelia, now have the confidence and skills to support classrooms and pursue further studies.

“At TAFE NSW, we’re empowered by strong, genuine relationships. This helps us be our best selves while living, learning, and walking gently on Aboriginal land. Working with Aboriginal students is an opportunity to support and celebrate their strengths and cultural knowledge. Many are now using their TAFE NSW studies to enter university or apply for Education Support Officer roles.” 🎓🌟
