Have you ever felt like you've run out of choice when it comes to your freedom of movement?

Like life is happening to you and you are not in the driver’s seat.

I have discovered that is possible to take control and change the way you move using the body-brain connection.

Current neuroplastic research is showing that you can create powerful neural pathways which change the way you move and feel.

I found myself trapped in a painful situation which I emerged from using this process.

Come along and meet me tomorrow Tuesday at 9:30 Queensland time.

Have you noticed some stiffness in how you move? You may have started to avoid some activities that you used to do because you’re feeling less flexible. As you look for solutions to fix you, are you finding these are only temporary and you are returning for the same treatment over and over.
I have found that when you bring attention to how you are overusing some parts of yourself and learn how to move as a coordinated body, including your nervous system, you will rediscover your flexibility and ease of movement. You will go back to doing the activities you love.
As a teaching school principal, I squeezed every bit of work out of myself for many years. This included lots of sitting at a desk late at night, hunched over a computer or books to mark. It also included stressed shoulders and a tight neck. Before long pain was always there. Happily, I have found how to change that – in a way that is gentle and lasting.
Now is the time to make the change before you begin to believe that doing less and less is inevitable. Look around and you will see plenty of people who gave in to stiffness and restriction.

Festival Time! Who's interested in finding out how we can use the brain's ability to change - Neuroplasticity - to improve how we move?

How our nervous system works to enable us to do what we want is amazing. How can we support this? Read here of a couple of research studies. Being playful and curious in Awareness through Movement lessons will allow you to keep living your best.

Balance is a complex task. The human head is heavy so we use multiple systems to keep our heads upright and to move through space on our legs. These interrelated systems are the vestibular system, the visual system, and the proprioceptive (body movement sensory and muscle) system.

They send signals from the eyes, ears and muscles to the balance organs and the nervous system. When you turn your head, your eyes go in the opposite direction, the Vestibular Ocular Reflex. This lets us know that when we move through space, our bodies are moving, but the world is not.

If one of these systems is not functioning correctly, or the person has suffered a neurological event such as a stroke then quality of life can be severely affected.

A study into the effects of eyeball exercises on balance and falls in the elderly gave this conclusion. “These results indicate that eyeball exercise is beneficial to improve the fall efficacy as well as the balance of the elderly compared with functional exercise. Eyeball exercise would be useful to improve balance and fall efficacy of the elderly who have experienced a fall.”

A study looking into visual restriction in stroke patients said “In the field of balance training, the manipulation of visual input was more effective than the manipulation of standing surface to reweighting the sensory information.”

Showing the human brain is able to continuously create new pathways, neuroplasticity, throughout life.

Worth a read! The scientific support for the Feldenkrais Method. How to make changes gently 😊

Feldenkrais Method - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics The Feldenkrais Method is a form of somatic movement education that integrates the body, mind and psyche through an educational model in which a trained Feldenkrais practitioner guides a client (the ‘student’) through movements with hands-on and verbally administered cues.

Ageing well is definitely one of my motivators for what I do.

It is one thing to say - do it. But what if you are a bit creaky and something seems too far away as a possibility.

I agree!

2 Important points here.

If you are in your 30s and 40s and you are saying this, now is the time for action. Reconnect with your flexible self that may be buckling under the pressures of work and emotions.

If you are in your 50s and beyond and you are saying, its too far away for me, it's time for action. Reconnect with your flexible self. The possibilities are still there.

Please note that I use the age numbers very lightly. I have seen young 70 and 80 year olds moving easily and old 30 years olds who aren't.

Either way, reconnecting with your flexible self is doable. It is a decision away.

I spent some glorious time with this little one, while she dressed up and danced joyfully to any music I could find on my phone that had a great beat. She always inspires me and leads me to think about being an adult and moving.

What do you believe about moving?

"Use it or lose it"
"Moving should be enjoyable"
"If it's not enjoyable, you should stop"

There was a time when I didn't seem to believe any of those things. I was so wrapped up in being a mum, my job and my "to do" list. Occasionally I would push myself to get going. Then I finally injured myself - enough to wake up.

The solution, I've found, is to have an connected body where all parts of me contribute to easier movement.

Taking time to allow my brain and nervous system let go of old habits and discover the parts of me that I'd forgotten about.

That is the "why" of "It's in the Move" where you can learn how to move again as you want, as I want - a bit like my little granddaughter x
