We are excited to share that our Kindergarten children have recently completed a wonderful four-week cultural learning program with Mel from Younga Yarns, who worked alongside our educators to introduce the children to the Yuwi language, culture, family, and way of life.
This program has been thoughtfully designed to combine modern-day Aboriginal culture with introductory Yuwi language, making it engaging, meaningful, and easy for our young learners to understand and remember. Our educators have also enjoyed learning alongside the children, further strengthening our commitment to embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our Kindergarten program.
Our first unit, Introduction to Language, explored:
πΏ Yuwi names for native animals and their habits.
π How to stay safe around Australia's native wildlife.
π An introduction to Dreamtime stories and their cultural significance.
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Family names and kinship.
π€πβ€οΈ Who the First Nations peoples are and the importance of recognising and respecting the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we live, learn, and play.
The children embraced each session with curiosity, enthusiasm, and respect. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they learn new words, ask thoughtful questions, and develop a deeper appreciation for the rich history and culture of the Yuwi people.
