Celebrating 25 years of research excellence. 👏
Congratulations to The University of Queensland Sustainable Minerals Institute (UQSMI) as they mark an incredible 25 years of research, collaboration and impact across the resources sector.
Since its establishment in 2001, Sustainable Minerals Institute has grown to become one of the world’s leading centres for research at the intersection of mining and sustainability, built on strong collaboration with industry, government, communities and research partners.
As part of the SMI25 celebrations, three former SMI Directors shared their reflections on the Institute’s journey, while the event also looked ahead to the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of sustainable mining.
We’re proud to work alongside UQ and celebrate this significant milestone for an organisation continuing to advance research, innovation and sustainable outcomes for the resources industry.

A little behind-the-scenes RCOE reality… 🦺🧼
Kelly has been busy giving all of our Underground and Flexi-Lab vests a well-earned wash, making sure they’re fresh, clean and ready for the next group through the doors.
With so many students, industry teams, visitors and training groups using our facilities, there’s plenty that happens behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly.
Safe to say, the vests have never looked better. Thanks, Kelly! 👏

It was great to welcome Year 10 students from Mackay Engineering College to the Resources Centre of Excellence for an industry immersion experience focused on the opportunities available right here in our region.
Students from Mackay North State High School, Mackay SHS, Sarina State High School, Mackay Northern Beaches State High School and Pioneer State High School joined us for a tour of the RCOE, getting a closer look at the technology, innovation and capability helping shape the future of the resources sector.
The visit formed part of a full day of industry experiences, which also included a tour of North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation, giving students valuable insight into the diverse careers, skills and pathways connected to engineering and industry.
Experiences like these are an important way to connect young people with industry early, broaden their understanding of what is possible and help inspire the next generation of our regional workforce.
Thank you to Mackay Engineering College, the participating schools, teachers and chaperones for joining us. We loved having you at the RCOE and hope there were plenty of new ideas about where a future career could lead. 👏

We’re proud to see the Junior Doctors Emergency Response Experience featured in At The Coalface 👏
The initiative brought together more than 100 junior doctors and 30 support staff for a hands-on training experience designed to strengthen emergency response capability in high-pressure environments.
Working alongside Queensland Mines Rescue Service, Anglo American, JCU: James Cook University, Australia, AMA Queensland and Mackay Base Hospital, participants were immersed in realistic emergency scenarios within the RCOE’s underground simulator before continuing patient care in clinical treatment areas.
A big thank you to At The Coalface for shining a spotlight on this collaborative initiative and the people who made it possible.
