Sold by the metre at Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies, the range of roll materials covers more ground than most people expect. W**d mat, insect exclusion netting, hessian and shade cloth are all available to cut to the length you need.

Hessian is worth having on hand for frost protection as temperatures swing through spring, and for wrapping newly planted trees. Insect netting over vegetable beds keeps cabbage moths and aphids off without spraying. W**d mat laid under gravel paths or around established plantings significantly reduces ongoing maintenance.

Spring bulbs and bare root perennials are in stock at Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies, and August is the right time to get them in the ground across the Macedon Ranges.

Gladioli in a range of varieties, Asiatic liliums, hosta, Russell lupins and a strong selection of herbaceous peonies including Shirley Temple, Marie Lemoine, Dr Greveux and Sarah Bernhardt are all available now. The peony bare roots are already showing their first buds, which is a good sign of the vigour in the stock.

Plant now and these will establish through the remaining cool weeks before putting on their full display from spring onwards.

The practical end of the nursery at Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies. Timber pickets, star pickets in a full range of sizes, coated steel garden stakes and bamboo canes, all in stock.

With spring planting approaching, stakes and supports are worth having on hand before you need them. New trees need staking at planting, climbers need something to run up, and veggie gardens get through bamboo canes quickly once the season gets going.

A courtyard project in the Macedon Ranges mid-installation. Macedon Nursery & Garden Supplies has supplied the bluestone paving, feature boulders, garden soil and Shapescaper edging that are pulling this space together.

Winter is one of the better times to get hard landscaping done. The ground is workable, trades are available and anything planted once the structure is in place goes into soil that still has some warmth left before spring.

The Macedon Ranges is tracking ahead of schedule this year. Grasses are already moving and despite some late frosts, the signs are there that the garden will kick off earlier than usual.

Soil preparation done now pays dividends once temperatures lift consistently through September. A slow-release fertiliser or organic soil conditioner worked into beds before spring growth begins gives plants the nutrients they need exactly when they start to demand them. For lawns, a pre-spring feed now supports the root system before the surge of growth arrives.
