Elder's Meditation of the Day - August 19

"If we keep everything in balance, we are in harmony with
ourselves and are at peace."
-- Fools Crow, LAKOTA

As within, as without, our present thought determines our future. If we want peace outside ourselves, we must first have peace inside ourselves. It's not what is going on but how we are looking at what is going on. We need to keep ourselves in balance. We must be careful to not get too hungry, angry, lonely. or tired. We must know the times - time to work, time to rest, time to play, time to sleep, time to pray, time to lighten up, time to laugh, time to eat, time to exercise.
There is a saying:
"The honor of one is the honor of all."
This means when we work with all, we need to also work
on one. We need to take care of ourselves. You cannot give away what you don't have.

Great Spirit, let me walk in balance today. Remove from me resentment, self pity, and self seeking motives. Let me love myself so I can love my neighbors

Elder's Meditation of the Day - May 23

"To me, if you're Indian, you're Indian. You don't have to put on
your buckskin, beads, and feathers, and stuff like that."
-- Cecilia Mitchell, MOHAWK

The most important thing that determines who we are is on our insides, not our outsides. If we are Indian inside, that's all that matters. Being Indian means to think right, to be
spiritual, and to pray. Feathers and beads don't make us Indian. Being Indian means to have a good heart and a good mind.

Great Spirit, today, let me think Indian

Elder's Meditation of the Day - April 13

"Once you make a friend, a friend never leaves you, even to death.
So a friend is really hard to find."
-- Wallace Black Elk, LAKOTA

Once, an Elder told me he made a decision to be my friend. He said this friendship wasn't based on my behavior or how I acted; he said the friendship was based on his decision. He decided to be my friend. This friendship has happened like he said. Even if I don't see him for a long time, or if I get mad at him, he has never changed his decision. This is true
friendship.

Great Spirit, I'm glad you are this kind of Friend.

Elder's Meditation of the Day - April 4

"You can pray for whatever you want, but it is always best to
pray for others, not for yourself."
-- John Fire Lame Deer, LAKOTA

When you are selfish and you pray, you are requesting things to flow only to you.
When you are selfless, you are praying for things to flow to others. The old ones say this is the highest form of prayer. Praying this way is according to the Natural Laws.

Elder's Meditation of the Day - September 16

"To me, the wisdom the Elders have to manifest is in teaching
people how to live in harmony and balance with each other and the Earth."
-- Sun Bear, CHIPPEWA

You cannot give away what you don't have. You need to give away what you have in order to keep it. Our Elders have lived their lives with a lot of trial and error. They have experienced how to do things well and they have experienced what didn't work for them as they grew old. They know things about living that we don't know. So, through the years the Elders have gained wisdom. They usually have a whole different point of view because of all their experiences. There are two ways to learn. Someone tells us what they did and we do the same thing or someone tells us what they did and we choose not to do it. Both of these paths will help us to live.

My Creator, teach me about choices and decisions and consequences. Put an Elder in my life to guide me

On this day in 1783, an entire Brule village was massacred by 1300 soldiers avenging the death of 30 soldiers who were killed for murdering Conquering Bear, the Brule chief during an argument over livestock.

The color of the skin makes no difference;
what is good and just for one
is good and just for the other.

In you, as in all men, are natural powers. You have a will. Learn to use it. Make it work for you. Sharpen your senses as you sharpen your knife....We can give you nothing. You already possess everything necessary to become great.
