The children and educators at Sparrow Early Learning Eagleby were keen to jump into the world of nature play! After puppet time and introductions we dove straight into messy, outdoor play fun. Exploring wood whittling skills and creating opportunities for small world play with dinos, mud, water and loose parts! Watch this space as we see 10 weeks of high quality play deepen & evolve as the educators try new and exciting ways to engage children in play rich environments! 💚

We were excited to welcome Areta from Bush Kindy Teaching to our centre!

Areta shared her knowledge and passion for nature-based learning, mentoring our educators and guiding the children through a hands-on whittling experience.

A wonderful opportunity to build confidence, explore new skills and embrace the benefits of risky play!

A snapshot of wonderful reflections from the team at Uniting Early Learning Kirwan, Townsville on the Country of the Wulgurukaba and the Bindal peoples.

We practiced:

✅Wood chopping
✅Sawing
✅Sanding
✅Whittling with both peelers and knives
✅Hand drilling
✅Hammering

And practical ways to introduce these experiences with children of all ages.

Woodwork is so much more than just safety and technique.

It is also about slowing down, challenging ourselves, making mistakes, stepping outside of our comfort zones, helping others, showing our strengths, feeling accomplishment, fostering risk literacy in ourselves & children, connecting with nature and each other.

Not to mention saving money and the environment from purchasing wooden toys and natural loose parts from expensive unethical companies!!

Uniting Early Learning Kirwan Townsville were fantastic hosts for our Risky Play & Woodwork with Real Tools Workshop today.

It was really refreshing and inspiring to meet such a cohesive and open-minded team.

In the posts to come, I will share snapshots of their beautiful natural outdoor spaces and the commitment and dedication the educators put in today to engage in critically reflective practice, open communication, hands-on learning and of course ... valuable risk taking!

I'm excited to see where today's learnings will take them as they implement their new found skills and knowledge!
