Just spent the afternoon online with these two legends from Warrandyte Childcare & Preschool Centre exploring ways to incorporate and embed nature play in their current setting.

Such rich conversations, reflection and exciting future planning!

Looking forward to next week's session with them where we continue to explore creative ways to engage children outdoors.

If you are interested in using your Vic Bush Kinder funding for online training, Bush Kindy Learning has a range of options to support activating your outdoor spaces for meaningful nature play exploration, as well as bush kinder excursion support.

"Honoured to have been able to participate in Areta Farrance's bush kindy workshop today. What I loved most about this whole session was how Areta was able to deliver her program in an authentic and captivating way. We shared, we created, we laughed and we learnt. Key take away for me - slow down and be present. So grateful to have had the opportunity to network with other passionate educators and professionals. If you haven't yet had the privilege to attend one of Areta's workshops I would make it a priority!!"

- Louise Faagase, Child and Family Practitioner Kingston East Neighbourhood Group

Thank you Louise for sharing your kind words! I too feel very grateful to have the opportunity to bring together early years professionals and school teachers to learn all about the foundations of bush kindy at Brisbane City Council Karawatha forest and continue to do the great work of connecting with Country in a human world increasingly disconnected from nature.

It felt awesome to pass on the learnings I have gathered along the way as a bush kindy leader, trainer, assessor and ECT and see these learnings carry on in others who support nature play opportunities for our children.

Karawatha forest delivered a classroom we could never have created ourselves! Watchful kookaburras, gentle rain on our faces, ant trails and meandering pathways... endless learning for all ages and all abilities.

Thank you to everyone who attended and shared in the experience Underwood Early Learning Centre Yulu-Burri-Ba Edge Early Learning Silkstone State School Kids at West End Amaze Education

I am proud to be a Children's Rights Queensland Alliance Member and stand alongside a long list of incredible organisations promoting and upholding childrens rights across Queensland.

Currently my Bush Kindy Teaching - Mobile Children's Programs and Bush Kindy Learning - Professional Development workshops are focussed on this commitment.

www.bushkindy.com.au

My work is centred around equal access to place-based nature play across age groups and abilities.

Currently, I am providing free bush playgroups to the communities of Logan, North Brisbane and Ipswich.

I also believe children have the right to play safely in natural green public spaces, so I'm a strong advocate for the community getting outdoors together to keep each other safe. For this reason, I also provide free training for parents and caregivers.

The programs remain free because I seek funding from local councils and private organisations and businesses.

I also work with early years education and care services to embed child-led practices in nature, ensuring children's voices are heard and supporting children's development holistically.

I'm also a speaker at conferences and professional development sessions. I recently ran two workshops at the Planning for Play event hosted by The Outsiders Play Advocates, where my talk focused on the importance of playing WITH children and understanding their experience through their eyes.

I've also applied for a Children's Rights Grant to make a book with children about Bush Kindy from their perspective, honouring children's right to have a voice, openly talk about their experiences, re-read them with each other, and share their wisdom about their own lives with adults and peers.

I hope that gives a snapshot of my current projects.

"We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing" - George Bernard Shaw

A little story...A pivotal moment in my career ....

About 18 years ago.. I was the director of a kindergarten... Somewhat still inexperienced....with a 4 year old boy who presented what we call 'challenging behaviours'.

Refusing to follow instruction, aggressive, rebellious, overwhelmed, dysregulated, destructive and angry.

I offered so many play opportunities and supportive learning environments. Met with his parents. Supported referral pathways, did a million observations to try and make sense of his behaviours. I even tried being 'firm' with my boundaries and classroom rules.

Then one day, I'll never forget it ....something changed.

We were both sitting under a big tree. When he was talking to me, I decided to put down the heavy weight I was carrying, my adult agendas and my power, my ego, ..... and I looked into his eyes.

I realised my eyes were no different to his, we both hold fears, worries, curiosity, innocence, wonder and a desire to learn, experiment and inquire.

My mood shifted. I entered the world of imagination. I climbed the tree with him, I dug some holes in the dirt, when he wore his favourite tutu from the dress ups area.... he offered me one, I wore it and then we ran around the yard.... and...we.. ....PLAYED!

All of the weight I was carrying lifted. I felt lighter, more clarity. More understanding and he let me into his world.

He saw that I not only was listening to his language of play, but I was showing I valued it by speaking the language with him.

In the end, it's not really the story of the 4 year old boy at all, It is the story of ME, rediscovering my nature play impulse and harnessing it as a teaching tool.

Reclaiming The Play Instinct: How Rediscovering Our Nature Play Impulse Transforms Pedagogy

đź’š For us to truly understand, we must walk in people's shoes, especially children's đź’š

Wow! What an experience! Bringing my mobile bush kindy to a conference!!

Not just any conference either! A conference dedicated to PLAY! Hosted by Outsiders: Play Advocates

Bush Kindy Learning as a proud PLAY ALLY event sponsor it was a joy to see the day come to life with such an incredible effort from the play community.

Turning a fully seated conference room in a hotel in a city into a nature play wonderland framed by a circle time for discussion, was quite the undertaking but extremely worth it!

Thanks to Goodstart Early Learning Shailer Park for allowing me to borrow some amazing natural loose parts, my incredible sister Hari and a very sweet and generous concierge named Andrew (5 gold star review for Royal on the Park Hotel & Suites by the way!) We arrived the night before and was offered a storage space for sticks, leaves and clay and the like! Not something I think the hotel has seen in their cupboards before!

Then on the glorious day ...not 1 but 2 back to back 50 minute workshops inviting the delegates to immerse themselves in the power of play.

Reclaiming the Play Instinct: How Rediscovering Our Nature Play Impulse Transforms Pedagogy.

We rediscovered our own nature play instincts in this laughter-filled, hands-on session! Explored how freedom, playfulness, and reflection can shift adult mindsets and open new ways of co-creating with children.

✨What play type are you drawn to?
✨Do you tend to play alone or with others?
✨Do you try one thing or lots of things?
✨If not, what stops you from playing?

These are all of the deep questions we reflected on.

Followed by the big reveal... As grown ups... WHY shOuld We PlaY toO!

If you were there or would like this workshop to come to your service, please comment or email [email protected]

I'd love to hear from you!

Thank you fellow play friends. It was amazing to connect and share.

Who's coming to play?

TWO WORKSHOPS!

With Bush Kindy Learning

Reclaiming the Play Instinct: How Rediscovering Our Nature Play Impulse Transforms Pedagogy.

We often support children’s play without truly entering the mindset ourselves.

In this hands-on session, we’ll explore what happens when adults return to their own play instincts.

Beginning with a brief look at how the mind loses its intrinsic motivation over time, we’ll then dive into unstructured nature play.

Through laughter, freedom, and a little chaos, we’ll observe how our moods and interactions shift and what this reveals about authenticity, control, and connection.

Together, we’ll reflect on how reclaiming our own play impulse can reshape the way we co-create learning with children.

What a joyous celebration! Our last cohort of Family Explorers graduated today!

We enjoyed a nature play morning full of discovery, creativity and community connections outdoors!

Congratulations to Misa and Karista as we thank them for sharing their skills today & successfully completing their 10 week nature play workshops & training with Bush Kindy Learning.

We look forward to seeing our Family Explorers continue to champion the benefits of nature play in our local communities.

Thank you Aunty Robyn Williams for welcoming us to Yugambeh Speaking Peoples Country during the training program.

We were very blessed to connect with this land. The cockatoos (Geira) and Kookaburras (Kagaru) say hello to us every morning!

Thank you Marion and Brookhaven Living for supporting this initiative. Due to their unwavering support, the training remained free to the families and supported every step of the way. Amazing!!

And thank you Shapes Early Learning Bahrs Scrub for generously donating your space for our sessions and Brookhaven Bean Cafe for the amazing fresh morning tea for today's celebration.
