🤍 Child Protection Week in Junior Kindy 🤍

This week in Junior Kindy we’ve been exploring the important concept of safe people — the trusted grown‑ups who help children feel protected, calm and supported.
Through our conversations, the children shared who their safe people are and described the ways those people help them feel safe — whether it’s keeping scary things away, giving comfort, helping them when they’re unsure, or simply being close by. These discussions help our younger children build early protective behaviours, understand who they can turn to, and recognise what safety feels like.
To extend this learning, the children created beautiful paintings of their safe people, proudly expressing the connections that make them feel secure.Talking about safe people from a young age helps children build confidence, trust and a strong sense of personal safety.

Child Protection Week reminds us that conversations start with us, and every small moment of connection makes a big difference.

💛 Child Protection Week | 6–12 September 2026 💛

At our Loganholme centre, we believe every child’s voice matters. As an Exceeding-rated service, we are proud to create an environment where children’s rights, safety, ideas and voices are valued every day.

Through meaningful relationships, conversations and hands-on experiences, we support children to feel empowered, valued, safe and heard — building their confidence and understanding that they have a voice and can seek help when they need it. 🌱

✨Stay tuned this week as we share some of our learning, conversations and hands-on Child Protection Week experiences with our children.

🏡 Enrol today and join a community where children are listened to, respected, protected and empowered to have a voice.

How are children contributing to decision-making within your service?

At Play and Learn Bismark Street, their Children’s Council provides meaningful opportunities for children to share their perspectives and contribute to decisions that directly influence their experience at the service.

Children contribute to discussions around their Code of Conduct, relationships, routines and learning environments. Their ideas have also been brought together in the Children’s Council designed “A New Friend’s Guide to Play and Learn”, helping children share what they believe is important for new children joining their service.

Take a moment to reflect:

How are children involved in decision-making within your service?
How are their ideas and perspectives documented?
Can you demonstrate how their contributions have influenced practice or led to change?

🐦✨ Meet Bingo! Our Newest Little Friend ✨🐦

We are so excited to welcome our beautiful baby bird to the Play & Learn family! 💚

The children have been busy coming up with name ideas, sharing their favourites and helping make the decision. We then invited our families to have their say too — and the votes are in!

🎉 BINGO is our winner! 🎉

We think it’s the perfect name for our newest little friend.

At Play & Learn, children’s voices matter. 💙 Simple opportunities like choosing a name give children the chance to share their ideas, make decisions and see that their opinions are valued.

This is one of the many ways we put children at the heart of our everyday practice — something we are incredibly proud of as an Exceeding rated service.

Welcome to the family, Bingo! 🐦💕

Today, the Junior Kindy children continued extending their science discoveries from last week’s outdoor learning environment by investigating a new question: What will dissolve in water, and what won’t? 💧🔬

We began by sharing our predictions and thinking about what might happen when different ingredients were added to water.

Noni thought nothing would disappear, while Cruz predicted that the cocoa powder would disappear. Sophia chose bicarb soda and salt, and Ini predicted that oats and salt would dissolve.

Then it was time to test our theories!

Noni and Sophia went first. Sophia was excited to see the bicarb soda disappear into the water, while Noni watched carefully and said, “It’s not working.” Her words showed us that she was comparing what she could see with her original prediction.

We then introduced another ingredient. Sophia chose cocoa powder, while Noni chose oats. As the oats began to sink to the bottom, Noni excitedly called out, “Look, mine, Nomi!”

Through this hands-on investigation, the children were encouraged to make predictions, observe changes, share their ideas and reconsider their thinking based on what they discovered. 🌱🧪

Their curiosity continues to guide our programming, as we build on the children’s interests and extend their scientific thinking through meaningful, play-based experiences. ✨

🌿 Exceeding Theme in Action | NQS Quality Area 5 – Relationships with Children 🌿

At Play & Learn, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. ❤️

These snapshots of our outdoor learning environment capture what Exceeding Theme 2 – Practice is informed by meaningful engagement with children looks like in action.

Rather than directing play from the sidelines, our educators are active participants—listening, wondering, creating and exploring alongside children. Whether mixing sand for imaginative recipes, painting together, constructing with loose parts, supporting dramatic play with butterfly wings, or helping children design cubby spaces, our educators take the time to build genuine connections that inspire confidence and curiosity.

When educators engage in children's play, they:
🌱 Follow children's ideas and interests.
💬 Extend conversations through meaningful interactions.
🤝 Build trusting, respectful relationships.
🧠 Support critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity.
💛 Create a strong sense of belonging where every child feels heard, valued and capable.

These moments aren't planned to fit a schedule—they evolve through responsive teaching and authentic relationships. It is this intentional approach that allows learning to flourish naturally, creating an environment where children feel safe to take risks, share ideas and lead their own learning.

This is what Exceeding NQS looks like. It isn't about having the newest resources or the busiest program—it's about educators who are fully present, deeply engaged, and committed to learning with children, every single day.
