Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

🦎 Happy Lizard Day at Gumtree Pocket! 💙🌿

Today we celebrated Lizard Day with some very special scaly friends! 🦎✨

Our Kindergarten children are lucky enough to have a very special room pet. A beautiful blue-tongue lizard named Bluey! 💙 The children help care for Bluey by learning how to gently interact with her, observing her needs and helping with feeding. Having a room pet provides so many wonderful opportunities for children to develop empathy, responsibility, respect for living things and a sense of belonging and connection with the natural world. 🌱💚

And today was extra special! Our Kindergarten teacher, Miss Abby, brought in her very own lizard, Luna, for the children to meet. The excitement was contagious! 😍 The children had the opportunity to gently pat Luna, observe her closely and even help Miss Abby with her feeding. 🦎🥬

Experiences like these encourage children to ask questions, make observations, build confidence and develop a deeper understanding of how we can respectfully care for and coexist with the animals around us.

🌿 But the learning doesn’t stop here! To extend our children’s learning and curiosity about reptiles and the natural world, this Monday we will be welcoming Wander with the Wildlings for a very special incursion! 🐍🦎🐢

We are so excited to continue exploring, discovering and learning about some amazing creatures up close! We can’t wait to see the children’s faces when they meet their new wild friends! 💚🌿✨

🎨🌿 Painting the World Around Us 🌿🎨

Our children have been enjoying a wonderful outdoor painting experience as an extension of their learning. Today’s provocation invited them to slow down, observe their surroundings, and paint what they could see in nature.

From the colours of the trees and flowers to the shapes, textures, and little details that caught their attention, each artwork reflects the children’s unique perspectives and creativity. Experiences like these encourage observation skills, imagination, self expression, and a deeper connection with the natural environment.

We love providing opportunities that inspire children to explore, create, and learn through meaningful, hands on experiences. 💚🖌️

🛡️ Safety Tuesday | Safeguarding Children Every Day 💛

At Gumtree Pocket, safeguarding children is at the heart of everything we do. Creating a safe, secure and nurturing environment isn’t just a responsibility, it’s part of our everyday practice.

We empower children by helping them understand their rights, encouraging them to use their voice, and reminding them that they always have trusted adults who will listen and help.

Across our Centre you’ll see our Look, Do, Tell posters, designed for both children and educators. These age-appropriate visual resources help children recognise when something doesn’t feel right, know what they can do, and feel confident to tell a trusted adult. They also support our educators in having meaningful conversations about safety, body autonomy and protective behaviours.

Together, we’re building confident, resilient children who know they are valued, respected and heard. 💚

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

❤️💛🖤 NAIDOC Week 2026

We sat in yarning circles, painted, sang and danced our way through some beautiful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories. Watching the children’s faces light up with questions and curiosity has been the best part of our week. These small moments are how understanding and respect begin.

This year’s theme is “50 Years of Deadly,” marking 50 years since NAIDOC was first Indigenous-led. Half a century of culture, resilience and community. That’s something worth celebrating with our children, even in small ways.

A huge shoutout to our dedicated educators, who put so much heart into preparing activities that truly immersed the children in NAIDOC Week 💛 Their dedication is what makes learning like this come alive.

Our Bush Kindy program is in full swing and what an amazing experience it has been for the Kindy children! 🌿
Embedded within our centre curriculum, Bush Kindy gives children the opportunity to explore, discover and learn in a natural outdoor environment. From climbing, collecting, observing insects, and problem-solving with natural materials, every session supports confidence, resilience and a deep connection to nature.
We love seeing children lead their own learning, take safe risks, and develop a strong sense of wonder about the world around them. 💚
