MERC is part of the SCU Institute for Development, Environment and Sustainability (IDEAS) and the School of Environment, Science and Engineering.

Most MERC researchers are based at the Lismore campus with some members based at NMSC and Gold Coast campus. MERC was funded in 2010 from the former Coral Reef Research Centre and the Whale Research Centre at SCU. Today MERC includes internationally recognised experts in coral reef ecology, benthic ecology, fisheries and aquaculture, water resources management, marine chemistry and marine mammals.

MERC provides outstanding opportunities for postgraduate students (PhD, Master and Honours) to continue their research careers in marine science.
