I became an Exercise Physiologist so I could squeeze in workouts between clients…
Not really — but it’s definitely a perk of the job 👌😅

What is one of the biggest challenges older adults tell me when they first come to the gym?

That they don’t know what to do or where to start if they’ve never done a gym program before!

That’s where we come in, as Exercise Physiologists to guide you in the right direction to get stronger, fitter and more mobile best suited to what you need.

We start with an assessment, we may give you some weights based resistance exercises, maybe some stretching and tailor a program best suited to your goals, health status and personal preferences.

We don’t just start with an exercise program, we support, help and assist you with what you want to get out of the gym, and your body! 💪

This dynamic movement challenges your body’s control, trunk stability, and coordination. It works nearly every muscle, making it a full-body exercise. While it’s a fun and effective move, it’s not for beginners—be sure to approach with caution, especially without proper guidance. A great addition to some clients' routines 💪

Nick tried out the new leg press, lifting an impressive 376 kilograms on his first try of the new machine. Only problem we’ve got is we can’t fit anymore weights on the machine. Well done Nick! 💪💪

EP’s should practice what they preach 💪

“I taught my 3 old son how to do a pull-down, and now he thinks that he is beating his mother”.

When my participant challenges to an arm wrestle, there’s no backing down..

It’s on.

Last time I beat Nich easily.

Though that was before 6 months of regular progressive strength training of chest, back, arms and shoulders.

Nich came out on top today,

Needless to say the weights are definitely making Nich stronger!

“The why of Exercise is unique, and specific to your aspirations”

It’s as individualised as you, and deserves special attention to your very own needs.

Think back to when you first started, how hard it was to move your body, step and to lift the weights..

Now picture yourself 3-6 or even 9 months down the track, feeling more mobile, able to get up off the floor with ease and turn your body the way it should be.

Your workouts don’t just apply to the gym, it transfers to everyday life, your ability to walk, balance your feet & access to the community like you deserve.

Everyone should be able to participate in day programs, and activities that they love and enjoy each week..

I often ask my clients,

“Wouldn’t it be worth to fulfil your potential and have the leg strength that you deserve to be able to do the things that you love?”

Absolutely it would, to be able to cook with ease, wihout being limited by disability..
To be able to walk to the shops and have a coffee with your mates or participate in a music event, arts class that you love every week.

It’s not just about the exercise, it’s so so much, much more to our NDIS participants and support organisations that we work with.

That’s why at Empowering.. we look at the “WHY” of Exercise Physiology, and how we can in partner in your transformation to your dream life, through your NDIS plan.

Today it was about being able to ride a motorcycle again for our client, an activity lost for over 6 months.. and for everyone else? To keep them out of a Nursing home.

Find your Why, in the day to day care that you provide to your clients, because small inputs lead to big changes.

Lachlan.

Episode 3: "A Day in the Life of an Empowering EP"

G'day everyone, Lachlan here again from Empowering EP in Lismore.

Today, I thought I'd give you a real, unfiltered look at what my typical day looks like as an EP. No glossy marketing spin - just the honest day-to-day that keeps me loving what I do.

My day kicks off with something I reckon makes us special - personalised text messages to each client. It's not just about appointment reminders; it's checking in, making sure they're ready for their session, and keeping everything running smoothly. It sets a brilliant tone for the day.

Then comes my favourite part - practising what we preach. I carve out 30-40 minutes for my own workout. Nothing fancy - just efficient supersets targeting major muscle groups. As EPs, we need to walk the talk, right?

My first few sessions are typically with long-term clients. These are properly laid-back sessions - we've built such great relationships that they feel more like catching up with mates whilst doing effective exercise. It's a lovely way to ease into the day.

Mid-morning through afternoon is where it gets really interesting. This is when I work with our diverse range of NDIS participants. Every session is different because every person is different. We might be working with a teenager keen to build strength and muscle, followed by an older adult focusing on balance, then someone working towards walking independently again.

What makes these sessions special? We make them an experience. Yes, we're doing serious exercise physiology work, but we're also having a proper chat, learning about what's happening in their lives, and really understanding what motivates them. It's not just about the exercises - it's about creating a highlight in their day.

Around 12 or 1, I'll grab lunch, but my brain doesn't switch off. This is when I catch up on admin, tweak our marketing, or work on improving our systems. Being an EP isn't just about the clinical work - it's about constantly evolving how we deliver our services.

In a typical day, I'll see 6-8 clients, with about 5-6 hours of face-to-face clinical work. The rest of the time? That's for making sure everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

By 5:30, I'm wrapping up, knowing I've given my best to every participant whilst still having energy for my own life. That's the beauty of how we structure our days - it's sustainable, enjoyable, and actually makes a difference.

Next week, I'll tell you more about the amazing participants we work with and their inspiring journeys.

Episode 2: "Beyond the Basic Gym: Our State-of-the-Art Approach"

G'day, Lachlan here again from Empowering EP Services in Lismore.

You know what drives me mad? Walking into a typical gym setup and seeing NDIS participants trying to navigate equipment that wasn't designed with them in mind. That's why we've done things differently at Empowering.

Let me take you on a virtual tour of our facility. When you first walk in, you'll notice something different - areas for different abilities. Lots of it. We've deliberately created wide, open areas where participants can move freely, whether they're using mobility aids or just need that extra breathing room.

See, rather than cramming in every piece of equipment known to mankind, we've carefully selected adaptable equipment that works for everyone. Take our adjustable cable machine - we've modified it so someone in a wheelchair can use it just as easily as someone standing.

Our functional training area has support rails at different heights, and every piece of equipment has been chosen because it can be modified for different abilities.

Our EPs, know that we don’t need to spend half the session figuring out workarounds for equipment. It’s designed optimally from the start - so we can focus on what we do best and matters most - our clients.

We've also got fixed Smith Machines for mobility aided Capacity, and a dedicated space for balance and mobility work. Everything's at ground level - no stairs or lifts to navigate.

But you know what's really special? Our equipment setup allows for what I call "success stepping stones." Someone might start with modified movements in our supported machine exercise area, then gradually progress to our more functional fitness zone. It's all about creating visible progress paths.

The best part? As an EP here, you're not constrained by equipment limitations. If you've got an idea for helping a client achieve their goals, chances are our setup can accommodate it.

We've invested heavily in choosing the right facility at Stepz Fitness because we believe both our participants and our EPs deserve the best.

When you work here, you're not just making do with whatever's available - you're working in an environment specifically designed for success.

Next week, I'll take you through a day in the life of an EP at Empowering. You might be surprised at how different it looks from your typical EP role.

This is Lachlan from Empowering EP Services. Thanks for listening.
