🔥Evacuation Drill 🚨

Yesterday our Como Community took part in our monthly evacuation drill, practicing how we would safely respond in an emergency. Children and educators followed evacuation procedures, moved calmly to our designated meeting area and completed head counts to ensure everyone was accounted for during our fire drill.

💬 After the drill, we sat together as a whole community to discuss with the children why we practice evacuations, what to do in an emergency? Did you hear the whistle? Listed multiple scenarios asking, “Where would we go if”?, Did you come across any barriers ? And many other questions that had some amazing responses especially from our bright Kinders 🌟

Regular drills are an important part of keeping our children safe at Como Park. Drills help children become familiar with evacuation procedures, build confidence in following instructions and allow educators to review and refine our emergency response practices as child safety is always our highest priority.✨

Our evacuation cots and emergency bags are throughly checked and maintained to ensure they are prepared and accessible for us in case of an emergency.

🪷 Comfy Cove 🪷

Welcome to Como Parks Comfy Cove! a calming space where children can relax, regulate and thrive 💛

Across all three of our communities here at Como Park Lilydale, they each provide their own version of a Comfy Cove that encourages children’s self-awareness, resilience and provides healthy coping strategies while empowering children to feel safe, supported and understood ! The Comfy Cove supports emotional wellbeing and self-regulation in a safe and nurturing environment that utilizes sensory toys, breathing prompts, mirrors, calming posters and other comforting resources.

Attached to this post is a video showcasing our Middles community (2-3yrs), where children can explore their family booklet that helps foster a sense of belonging, sensory toys and cozy cushions that provide both comfort and a sensory experience along with posters that support strategies for breathing and calming the nervous system, such as Rainbow breathing & Dragon breathing. 🌈

In this space children are both welcomed and encouraged to identify, acknowledge, feel and regulate their emotions, or simply used as an opportunity to recharge before returning to play.🪷

Spelling and Literacy 📝

At Como park Lilydale our 3–5 Kindergarten room has been developing spelling and literacy skills through fun and creative experiences! This experience in particular has become very popular within the community, as the children enjoy spelling out their names using a variety of materials such as icy pole sticks, marbles, small rocks and crystals.

The children trace and form the letters in their names using these materials, creating something special while also strengthening their letter recognition and early writing skills. Through this hands-on experience, children are encouraged to visualise the shapes and sequence of the letters in their names, supporting their understanding of literacy concepts in a meaningful and engaging way.

This experience also promotes fine motor development, concentration, cognitive skills, problem solving and creativity as children carefully place and manipulate the materials. Children are all at different stages of learning and this activity can be adapted to support each child’s individual abilities and confidence levels, ensuring everyone can participate and succeed.

Embracing the Wonders of Mud and Dirt 🌱

https://www.facebook.com/100076106251622/posts/978361764710690/

I wanted to share this post about the wonders of dirt and mud because it beautifully highlights the many benefits of messy play, which strongly connects to our philosophy and the image of the child that guides our program that we actively encourage across all of our communities at Como Park Childcare and Kindergarten Lilydale.

Our outdoor spaces and experiences are thoughtfully designed to provide open-ended environments that support messy, imaginative play.
Through exploring mud, dirt, water, and nature, children are given opportunities to create, explore and connect with the natural world around them.

Messy play also supports children’s sensory development, creativity, confidence, wellbeing and sense of belonging! There is so much learning found in a little bit of mud 🌱🤎

Incorporating Culture into our everyday routines 💫

Here at Como Park Lilydale, Rest is such an important part of a child’s day. It gives growing bodies and minds time to recharge, supports emotional wellbeing and helps children feel ready for more learning and play.
Across all three of our communities, we use calming music each day to create a safe sleep environment, helping children slow down, relax and settle into a peaceful rest and sleep routine.

Around four years ago, during NAIDOC Week our educators began using rest time as an opportunity to incorporate more Indigenous culture into our communities. Since then, it has become a core part of our routine and a meaningful way we embed Aboriginal culture into our everyday practice here at Como.

One of the most commonly played artists during our rest time is Geoffrey ‘Gurrumul’ Yunupingu, known as Gurrumul. He was an Indigenous Australian from the Gumatj clan. Born blind, Gurrumul used music to express identity and deep connection to the land. His music allows us to acknowledge and pay respect to the communities who have cared for this land before us, while helping children build an early understanding of culture, connection and belonging.

In addition to incorporating Aboriginal culture, we also use this time to explore music and rhythm from a range of cultures, supporting inclusivity and diversity within our communities.

Playing Indigenous music during rest time offers many benefits for children:

-Helps create a calm and relaxing atmosphere
-Supports children to feel safe, secure, and settled
-Builds familiar routines that make rest time easier
-Introduces Aboriginal culture in a natural and respectful way
-Encourages mindfulness and gentle transitions into sleep

If you would like to introduce Indigenous music and culture into your family’s daily rhythm, please find the link below to explore the music we use during rest time at Como Park Lilydale.
